Anyone retrofit KAFAS 2 CAMERA for (FCW,LDW,SLI)?

Has anyone retrofitted KAFAS camera? I recently purchased a 2016 F48 and wanting to do this on my car. Also, does anyone know if the retrofits void warranty?

Did you ever find out?. It is possible and if using genuine BMW parts should not void any warranties. Be warned BMW make it difficult to retrofit, you would have to replace a fair few parts to get FCW, LDW etc working ($800-$1,000) for steering wheel and columns switches and assorted parts alone. I doubt you would get away with less than $3,500 all in and this assumes BMW /dealer would activate some of the functions which are protected. IMHO, cheaper to change the car.

In my case, BMW never offered the X1 F48 with Kafas camera on the Brazilian market. So it's not as easy as buy another cars and it gona be a unique project here. I would like to review this topic.

I have already purchased some components: Camera (9370431), Module (9399247), steering column (9330567), steering wheel controls (9326475).
I found a dealer that has the correct windshield... something that I had missed?

Wire from camera to unit is in perfect condition but the power wire was cutted.
I will need some help.

Is there a part number for the OEM power wiring harnesses? Or do I need to customize?

Did you succeed with KAFAS2 retrofit?

Hello,

I haven't had a chance to start yet, I just got back from traveling this week.

I plan to start this weekend preparing the wiring and connections for the KASFAS 2.

In the meantime, I discovered that the SAS module is directly connected to the KAFAS and, in the future, the adaptive LED lights that I have already purchased.

So, updating the list of what will be needed to get the KAFAS 2 up and running, it is much longer than I initially imagined.

(S5ASA) Driving Assistant
Camera (9370431)
Module (9399247)
steering column (9330567) - this is for Adaptive LED headlight no needed for S5ASA
steering wheel controls (9326475)
Connection wire for KaFAS camera (61119360052)
Switch for emergency flasher system (61316842274)

(S5ATA) Driving Assistant Plus
Control unit for SAS (34509500079)
RP hydraulic unit DSC (34517916190)
DSC pulse generator, front (34526850767)
Pulse generator, DSC rear (34526858467)

Not sure
Vibration Generator (32306868933)

I'll take advantage of the fact that I'll be installing SAS to add the following items that didn't come with my X1 from the factory.

(S2VBA) Tire pressure display
(S223A) Adaptive suspension
(S552A) Adaptive LED headlight

All the components are already purchased, but I haven't had time to install them yet.

I really admire the effort you are putting into this, that’s really a lot of effort. I am glad my car came with 5AT from factory Looking forward to your progress.

Anyway I see no mention of FSC codes but KAFAS2 does need FSC for FCW & SLI. So if you haven’t got these already you should look into that.

I am btw trying to see if I can retrofit the radar from F30 / F10 / F15 as the camera only adaptive cruise is well very prone to sunlight and fails therefor often.

The adaptive LED headlights are really nice, unfortunately I have only the 5A4headlights and would love to upgrade to 552 but they are so expensive…

Yes! It really is a lot effort.

As I said, unfortunately BMW Brazil offers very expensive vehicles that don't even come complete in the most expensive version. And the official dealrs don't offer any support for retrofits. To be honest, the first time I called 2 of the biggest BMW dealers in Brazil to talk about the i-Level update, they didn't even know what it is. I ended doing it on my own.

Yes, I'll probably need the FSC.
I'll see if I can get it from Vladimir from BimDoc.

During the process, I'll probably have a lot of errors and I'll count on your help and the others on the forum to solve them! lol

Don’t think that in Europe the dealers are any better Official dealers don’t do retrofits. it’s the independent specialists that have knowledge but these are few as well. Retrofits are mostly DIY’s anyway but option levels are probably better here in Europe.

I've finally started this retrofit project.

The GOALS are:

S5ATA = Driving Assistant Plus
S223A = Adaptive suspension
S552A = Adaptive LED headlight (LCI Headlight)
S2VBA = Tire pressure display

Just like with PDC+PMA, I can basically only work on weekends and holidays... but that's okay, I'll gradually get it done. To be honest, I've accumulated several projects on the BMW X1 F48 and I'll try to execute them in parallel since the components are already out of place, making access and wire routing easier.

First, I started by fixing the main modules:
- Kafas in the front above the fuse box.
- SAS in the rear near the PDC module.

I took measurements to route the cables and outside the vehicle, I matched the colors and pin configuration of the cables, following roughly what's available in the ISTA documentation.

The harness comes out of the SAS module and splits between the BDC module, fuse box, Kafas module, and the front right wheel (I passed through the same tunnel as the front PDC).
For the harness of the left front wheel, I passed it behind the rear seat under the plastic trim tunnel and followed behind the DBII tunnel.

After positioning the wires at the front but not yet connected, I started wiring for the rear wheels.

I removed the wheel trims and rear bumper to identify where the wires will pass through and mounting points.

Next Steps:
- Route the wires to the rear wheels.
- Connect the pins to the SAS module connector and ground them.
- Begin front connections: pinning in the BDC module, pinning in the KAFAS module connector, fuse box (I'm still figuring out this part). and grounding.
- Remove the front column trim to route the wires to the camera positioned on the windshield.

Impressive and very clean / factory like as I am used to from you ☺️

You sure you don’t want to do the Comfort Accces aerials and smart opener in the rear bumper in the same go?

This week I have completed the wiring to the rear spring strut.
I finalized the pinning of the connector for the SAS module.
And have stated the connector to the BDC module.

I took the opportunity to run the harnesses that I have made in this retrofit and previous ones inside the channel behind the BDC module, following the original standard.

The difficult part for me has been working on the fuse box.
To detache you need to release lock on the left side so that the whole assembly moves to the left, making it possible to release and access the back. (It took me a while to figure this out)
To access the pin terminal, you need to pull the BLUE guide (be careful not to break it).

I found out that the terminals I bought are not compatible with the BMW X1 F48 fuse box and grounding.
I have purchased new terminals, so I will wait for delivery approximately 2 weeks.

In the meantime, I will advance as much as possible regarding the wiring from the camera down to the windshield, heating system...

The purple and blue wires that appear in the last photo near the BDC will be connected to the kafas module.

mrpingu I cleaned the area before taking the photos
It wasn't that clean... I will still clean the wheel arch protector before reinstalling them.

YES! I will take the opportunity to install the Comfort Access.

.

Nice pictures And a lot of work

Can you let me know the part number or the correct terminals? Strugling with this as well. As a matter of fact I found a new retrofit: Automatic Soft-close, this was never released for X1 but found out X5 uses sames locks

I believe the correct part number is:
61131387142 - Ground
61136937069 - Fuse

I bought these 2 from ECS Tunning but the import process is slow.

So, I will test these 2 options as well.

https://pt.aliexpress.com/item/40010...yAdapt=glo2bra

https://pt.aliexpress.com/item/32692...yAdapt=glo2bra

I'm looking forward to seeing the result of the retrofit Automatic Soft-close.
And I'm also curious to know the result of the radar installation.

According to the fuse terminal.
I bought the same as you from Aliexpress but didnt arrive yet, hope it works. Last time I bought similiar it hadn't had great fit in fusepanel. (bought even original BMW as I only needed one (part no: 61130007437 to get power to the radar)

Radar (offtopic)
Radar didn't work out, while I connected it to the canbus no matter what I tried it wouldn't talk with the other ECUs. Even trying different coding parameters that might help. But it wouldn't show up in E-sys nor ISTA. So I came to the conclusion it must talk with the ICM, but swapping out SAS for ICM might be getting too tricky, so trying to sell the radar again. Also while in theory ICM should cover all functions of SAS I am not sure if it talks in the right way. When comparing F15 with F48 also all flexray buses run a little bit different so I would have to compensate for that. Then I came to something that's called gateway tables within the BDC gateway module, as far as my research goes these tables define how the network layout is.

Example flexray buses:
In case of F15 the the ICM + DSC is on pin 33 + pin 34 on the BDC A258*8B.
In case of F48 only DSC is on pin 33 + 34.
F48 SAS is on pin 11 + pin 12, on F15 this is reserved to Transfer Box, but there also a lot of loops.

Just try to compare the wiring diagram called: System Overview FlexRay and CAN on both cars and be prepared for a wire maze. Anyway I could write a whole own topic about this but my conclusion is that proceeding any further is a slippery slope that might end up in change the whole car to match the F15 network lay out. In other words, I might as well just buy a F15 instead.... I don't have the budget nor will to do that at this point. So radar is up for sale.
---
Soft Close(offtopic)

Soft close retrofit is way safer, it doesn't need any coding or any communication with CAN, LIN or FlexRay. Just changing locks, and some modification of wiring in the door and power from the fusebox. I just cannot find the driver door lock for a reasonable price. As in below 200 EUR for lock + motor. I already got the locks for the 3 other doors for 400 EUR.

The physical part of the KASFAS and SAS (EDC) modules is nearly complete. It really is much more work than I initially imagined.

Passing the wires through the original locations requires a lot of materials, clips, and ties of different types, in addition to terminals and wires with the correct thicknesses.

Regarding the thicknesses, I didn’t use the exact measurements recommended by BMW; instead, I bought from EFI Conversions automotive wires of 20 and 18 AWG from eBay. At times, it was difficult to insert the terminals into the connector because the wires were too thick. Perhaps I should have used 20 and 22 AWG. Lesson learned.

The aliexpress terminal in the fuse box didn’t fit perfectly, but it was enough to stay in place without easily coming loose. The fuse itself fits with some pressure, keeping the terminal secure.

I still need a large 10A fuse (BMW PN 61146953466) to SAS Module.

The connection at the BDC of the KAFAS module is a bit confusing because when looking at the blue and red wires coming from terminals 9 and 10 of A56 to X203*1V and X203*2V, it’s not clear where they will connect. Clicking on the photo shows some sort of splice somewhere, but searching in ISTa for the destination provides a clearer path.

So if I'm correct, I should connect the blue wire to connector A258*7B of the BDC, but terminal 47 is occupied by a purple wire. To avoid cuts and splices, I used a wire splitter (hopefully it will work like I did in the 5DP retrofit). This way, it will be easy to undo if something goes wrong. Terminal 48 was free to receive blue wire. Is it right?

Another question is about the "jump" on A56*1B, which points terminals 2 to 8 and 5 to 11. It depends on the equipment installed. What equipment would those be?

Next steps:

- Install the steering wheel controls for lane assist (BMW PN 61319326475). Hoping this is correct, as it was quite expensive!
- I will take the opportunity to install the new Switch unit steering column (BMW PN 9330567), as I will soon be changing the headlights to the Adaptive LED FCI model. For this kafas needs to work!
- It may be necessary to get a Control Unit for touch detection (BMW PN 6875202) and a Vibration Generator (BMW PN 32306868933). (I’ve already bought both just in case). But I`m not sure. Anyone know?
- Review all connections before reconnecting the battery.

Problems to solve:

- I bought this Windshield Mirror Cover (BMW PN 51169275008) and Trim Panel (BMW PN 9293294), but it didn’t fit perfectly. It seems there’s not enough space to accommodate the components and cameras for the windshield. Does anyone know if there is another PN?

- Take it to the dealer to have someone install the new Adaptive suspension, to activate S223A. Sure, if the SAS/EDC module works!
- Replace the DCS module since mine is BASIC and I need the High module (BMW PN 34517916190) for Driving Assistant Plus.
- New Pulse Generators for the brakes might be needed.

I will also use this opportunity to work on the Comfort, HUD, and Wireless Charger... but that’s a topic for another post. At least I will pass the wires and leave them disconnected, so I can tackle one problem at a time when it comes to coding.

Continuing… today was the day to remove the steering wheel to install the new buttons and take the opportunity to run some wires, change the turn signal switch module for automatic headlight activation.

I bought the Vibration generator (32306868933) and the wiring (32306871213) for the S5ATA Driving Assistant Plus.

Issues founded:

1- I can't find a way to connect the Vibration generator. In the new wiring there is an extra connector, but it seems that something is missing between them, maybe an extra wire.

2- Another problem is that when attaching the Vibration Generator to the steering wheel, the worst happened. The screw head broke. Now I need to find a way to remove it and also find the screw part number to buy another one. (Those 2 screws came with the Vibration generator). What a mess.

That optional is if you have the SAS installed or not. Can-bus needs to be terminated at both ends. Inside the SAS and KAFAS there is a terminating resistor (both shown in the diagram) so that is for ACC/TJA. I had to remove that wire for the radar retrofit as the radar has also a terminating resistor but still I couldn’t get the SAS Communicatie with the radar and that’s the point I gave up.

1- Yeah should be two wires, 12V+ and terminal 31(ground)

Very well observed.

I ordered the correct PN.

I still haven't been able to solve the problem with the screw of vibration generator. I'm going to look for a professional who knows how to remove the screw because I didn't have any success using an extractor.

Would it be possible to saw a cut in the screw and then use a flat screw driver? Even if you make a cut in the surrounding metal a bit, that wouldn't really matter as you won't see it and it's not impacting the structure.

One correction here.

While disassembling the BDC to run the wires for the passenger side handle for the Comfort Access retrofit S322A, I noticed that I had split the blue and red wires.

The wires coming from connector A56*1B, terminals 9 and 10, should be connected to terminals 48 and 47 of the BDC A258*8B, not to A258*7B as I had previously connected them.
