Trunk LED light question
Howdy,
I have a question about the interior lighting system. I own a BMW X1 F48 / 2016, which has in the trunk only one led in the upper area. I would like to know if I can mount a second led lamp, identical to the one already existing, in parallel with it. Could it affect the electrical installation or the CAN BUS in any way? Stefan |

I would think that you could run a 2-conductor cable from one side to the other in the luggage compartment and connect it in parallel with the existing LED lamp. The existing light is activated by the Terminal 30B Relay that is monitored for faults by the BCD. Only when the Terminal 30B relay fails will a fault code be sent, not when or if the LED bulb fails. So, in my unqualified opinion, you should be good to add another light without fear of throwing a code as long as you don't exceed the circuit's allowable current draw (5A).

I think this thumbnail is the circuit that you are interested in (left half of the circuit):

I finished the 2-nd luggage trunk light retrofit and I get back with an update, as promised.
For a better visibility of the main trunk and for the under floor space as well, I chose to mount the light on the trunk door. The result is excellent, producing an uniform light all over the trunk. The time for the whole operation: 1 full day. Difficulty: medium. Necessary knowledge: dismantling way and sequence of the trims, electrical scheme (thank to Ridin'Dirty). Tools: plastic levers for the trims, T25 and T40 star screwdriver, cutter, soldering gun, electrical tape, car tape for wires. Skills: passion for cars and ... a lot of patience to do a proper work. If you need more info, just let me know. |

Not as clean .. but on both our cars I have a large LED light bar.. I just zip tied it to the trunk cover and ran wires to the LED on the side of the trunk. Super bright and easy. Only downside is to remember to disconnect the leads (I used quick connect pigtails) when/if you ever need to take the trunk cover off.

Started on this mod as well. I took it a small step further and bought 2 lights.
One on the side and ome on the same location as StefanJ Lamps I used, same as the original luggage compartment light: 63319280501 I must say, pulling the wire was more work than I anticipated. |
