S235A Retrofit OEM towing hitch / trailer coupling S235A

Preparations
Tools needed

Drill
30mm Step Drill bit
16mm pipe socket
8mm pipe socket
10mm pipe socket

Check
Check if you have fuse holder Z7*7B see attached images
Check if your BDC has the right Hardware options:
00000F33 HW_Option_Body_LC_WBL_BLSH
00000F36 HW_Option_Body_TC_TERM30FREAR

This can be found out several ways
1. Check with bimmerutility the SVT
2. Check with e-sys if you have the right HWAP versions
3. Calculate a SVT_soll.xml with added S235A code (advanced)
and see if you get HW differences on the BDC or not.

Check which engine cooling fan you have
if your fan is not 600W, BMW says you need to upgrade your fan and therefore your B+ terminal to a 600W version. However as I only use the towing hitch sporadically and I live in country with a cool climate I skipped this part.

Parts needed

Towing Hitch bar & Towing hitch ball (51129464289)

Heat insulatio (5148729772)

Depending if already installed or not
Fuse holder Z7*7B (61149270357)

If you don’t have 600W Fan & B+ Terminal and are going to retrofit this aswell
B+ Terminal (61149321023, 61148782850, 61149321024)
Housing with Fan (17427617610, 17429468279 )

Original post

I could source a detachable towing head + bar from the junkyard for reasonable price.

The problem is I don't know which wiring is attached to it and what parts I do need to source after that.

Can someone provide the retrofit instructions from BMW for F48?

I found one on the the net by for F26 (X4)

Got the instructions and followed it. Attached

But have a problem that Terminal 30F will not switch on and thus not powering the trailer module. Anyone did a S235A retrofit before?

I double check all wiring and it is correct.

Only thing I am afraid of is that my BDC doesn't support this but I still don't know how to test this.

Edit: SOLVED, it was that VO coding of BDC was not correct. You have to code the BDC first, that will Switch on the 30F terminal. From there you can code the AAG module

mrpingu great content as always. Sorry for the off topic : is the exhaust tip removable? Mine’s got the grimes and carbons I hope to remove and give it a good scrub
Also where do you find the manuals for the specific jobs?

Yes it’s loose element:
https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=HT91-EUR-09-2017-F48-BMW-X1_18dX&diagId=18_1184

There is this online independent BMW part shop that sends me the retrofitting instructions after I asked for it. This was my first retrofit but now I know these can also be found in ISTA.

Hello my friend mrpingu !
Do you have a short video showing how the trailer coupling works?
Is there an activation button?

Do you know if there are any limitations related to the msport bumper?

Thank you

It’s manual on the X1, so no buttons but when trailer is electrically coupled then it automatically disables rear PDC because OEM

No limitatations with M-sport bumper.

Just added my tow bar with a mixture of items bought separately. Here’s the brief update:

Parts
1) towbar carrier (beam) - 6860955
2) tow trust or brink towball (both fit)
3) dedicated 13 pin electrics by Conwys (others by ECS, PF Jones all very similar)

Install
1) Rear bumper and beam out, replaced with new towbar beam.
2) drilled through the lower right section of the rear floor. See photos.
3) connected wiring (need to check brake and indicator wires - black/yellow and blue/grey respectively)
4) wired into fuse box for power
5) needed to trim off bits of the aluminium heat shield
6) all trims and bumper back.

Can I ask, what indication on the instrument cluster do you get to show the trailer indicators are working?

Thanks

You get an warning if lamps are not working, atleast with the OEM module. I once loaned a trailer and it said right away that the left taillight was gone.

Both cluster and iDrive.

Not towed anything nor tried the electrics yet. I added the towbar for bicycle racks mainly.

The installation instructions suggested checking with towbar simulator but I’ve not done so. I may take it to a local towbar fitting shop for them to check it.

Thanks for the replies... Mr P...I went with the third party option....and not seen any cluster notifications of the trailer indicators... even though all the lights appear to work ok....as with Fitf8.... can bus connected...

>Retrofit Wiring Kit (71602245623)

Hi everyone,

I'm gathering parts for a towbar retrofit and have a specific question about the wiring.
I have the original rear bumper harness, part number 61 12 6 821 875. My idea is to use this harness and then make the necessary connections from it to the towbar control module (AHM).
Has anyone attempted this? My thinking is that this approach would be closer to a true factory installation compared to using a complete retrofit wiring kit.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Certainly possible, did you thought about what you want to do with the wires that have to go to the fusebox in front?

You can always buy the correct terminals, wires and crimp everything. This is my preferred method. But when I did this retrofit, it was one of my first and didn’t had the experience to create my own loom.

Thanks for the confirmation, mrpingu! That's really helpful.

You've brought up a great point about the wires that go to the front fusebox – that's something I need to plan carefully. This is exactly why I'm trying so hard to find the official wiring diagram for the module. Unfortunately, I can't seem to track it down anywhere.

Any chance you have it saved somewhere and would be willing to share it?
