F48 Rear view camera retrofit

Hi there,

I am preparing for retrofitting my F48 with rear view camera, I have all needed parts but I don't know which VO should I add and which modules do i have to code. Can someone help me with this? If someone needs, I have a manual for this retrofit from BMW.

Regards,

I would double check with whoever sold you the parts that they will work with the F48 Entrynav/Entrynav 2 head unit, all that I have seen are for NBT head units which will not work on F48. There is a forum thread on this topic and it includes links for a cheap and effective alternative installed by many F48 owners including me.

I bought OEM retrofit set from my local dealer, so I think it should fit my car. I don't have ICOM, only E-SYS this is why I need to know which modules are required to code with VO.

The retrofit is very simple!
Lay wiring harness to BDC and pin.

Coding should be HU_entrynav, BDC, ICAM (RVC).

Has worked so successfully with the F45 with Esys.

Hi
This is what I fitted
https://www.in-car-install.co.uk/sho...ds-evo-screen/

They provide everything incl usb install instructions although I would be happy to provide more info. What this kit does is piggyback onto existing HU, there are dip switches for 6.5”, 8.8” and 10” screens. I took me 3 hours to install, I worked slowly and carefully and wrapped some wires with extra cloth auto tape. The kit detects signal from rear parking sensors and reverse gear signal and adds camera images to parking sensor display on screen. My installl worked faultlessly for the 20months I ran car (before selling car) after install. No coding required as plug and play.

Thanks for the info, does the fitting require a lot of ripping out to run cables to the boot?

Jason
The install requires the cable between HU and CID to be re-routed via the provided module [I.e plug existing cable from HU (head unit- which is essentially the box behind radio buttons) to CID (central info display) into module and use additional cable provided to run from module into back of CID]. The install then requires thin camera wire to be run from module (fitted next to HU) along dash (under trim) - pops off so easy , around doors (using trim) , into boot lid where it is connected to replacement handle with camera. I would say no ripping out rather careful removal of some interior trim (boot lid and centre consol (radio)) rest involves gently pushing wire under edge of passenger door sill, under trim of pillar between front and rear doors) under trim above passenger rear door , under trim above rear parcel shelf/boot(trunk) cover. Then camera wire (thin a) threaded through existing rubber concertina hose into boot/trunk lid and inside boot lid to door handle. A new handle with built-in camera , externally identical to BMW part, is provided. Experienced fitters (e.g) supplier can do in 90 mins, it took me 3 hours. Dismantling instructions (to gain access HU and CID) and for boot are also available online including videos. I used BMW ISTA+ for BMW detailed workshop step by step instructions but PDF copies are available online. A good auto electrician would also be available to install for you. The camera seller also provides detailed install instructions on usb using pdf format which is good for getting to HU and CID as well as removing boot inside trim, it is a bit vague on running cable inside car from front to back but I found this easy to work out. If you have never done a diy car hifi install or interior trim repair it could be daunting however, watch a few Youtube videos, ask the supplier to send you install instructions before you buy so you can see what is involved and allow sufficient time and it is not difficult. You will also find some detailed instruction. on how to get to CID and HU on This forum, look for threads such as replacing CID, retrofit 8.8” CID etc.

many thanks for taking the time to post a very detailed reply.
This mod does sound very simple to do. my main concern was having to remove panels and my only previous attempt with another vehicle resulted in lots of plastic clips snapping at it never did go back together correctly! As you say there is not much to dismantle so this sounds doable!
My X1 is not new (2018) but is new to me and it is in mint condition and i would like to keep it this way so I am a little nervous of taking too much on.
The 2 things I dont like about the car are 1. no reversing camera 2. non folding wing mirrors. you have pointed me in the direction of camera (thank you) I just need to find if its possible to add auto folding mirrors......

Thanks again

Jason

Hi Jason,

I installed an aftermarket rear camera a while ago, and I made a pdf (attached) with all the steps needed. All the information was taken from ISTA.

There're more straightforward ways of routing the cable to the back, but I wanted it close to the factory setup. So I routed the line by the central cables hub, ending with a neat installation.

I'm attaching a few pics for your reference too.

Do you know if they could be used for my X1 2016 with HU Entrynav?

I hope you have it all coded and working by now.
I would appreciate some photos to see the result on the screen.

By the way, one thing I wonder, will the image of the pdc be shown on the screen with the instructions of the parking assistant?

Maybe you can answer me.

Your pdf attachment showing BMW doc with Retrofit kit number 66 21 2 447 605 is really useful info, a oem kit is obviously now available, I would be interesting to see side by side comparison on ease of fitting. The bmw part in U.K. costs £672 (incl taxes but excl shipping) compared to £297 (incl tax and shipping) on aftermarket option which does not involve quite the complexity jrveron went through in his post. Aftermarket is plug and play, so no coding needed either.

I broke down the needed parts

1. Either Full Retrofit kit:
Retrofit kit BMW - Reverse Camera 3AG - 66212447605

2. Or source these parts seperately
probably cheaper than option 1

Often are the next 3 items sold together from breakers
Camera ICAM: 66539475687 (several part numbers, exist, see realoem)
Cover for rearview camera: 51247345709
Boot lid/tailgate pushbutton ICAM: 51247463163

Rep cable rearview camera: 61119378753

If you need to retrofit R3 or G* in the manual you need:
61136814611 Bus interface 10x 120 OHM

You already have R3 if you have xDrive, Hybrid engine or LED headlights.
