Part #s for LED outer and inner taillights:

63-21-7-488-547 - Left Outer
63-21-7-488-548 - Right Outer
63-21-7-350-697 - Left Inner
63-21-7-350-698 - Right Inner

While you're at it, might as well pick up LED bulbs for the brake lights, turn signals and reverse lights:

1156 Brake lights and turn signals: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H6VLWX2

1156 Reverse light: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07H6WSL4R

Remove the outer brake light housing and detach the factory plug. There's a purple retainer clip that you will need to slide out using a small screwdriver. This will allow you to depin the wires.

To depin a wire, using a small screwdriver, gently press down onto the catch of the wire you want to remove. This doesn't require much pressure.

Once released, you can pull the wire out.

Now using your small screwdriver, gently reposition the catch to it's locking position. This will now be ready to repin.

There are small rubber grommets inside of the unused wire slots. You will need to remove this. I used a small pin to slide it upwards out of the plug. Try to keep it intact, and reuse to plug the new slot that will be left open after your repin.

This is the configuration of your final setup.

Light Blue
Purple
Open
Brown
Open
Yellow/Black

Be sure to replace the purple retaining clip when you're done.

There is no repinning needed on the inner tail lights. Simply remove the old light, grab the new one, swap the halogen bulbs for LED, bolt it on and you're good to go.

Next, go into BimmerCode. There are two sections you will need to make adjustments, all in Simple Mode. Everything is located under BDC.

The first section is for the rear daytime running lights. You need to change all of these to active.

Next will be under bulb types and bulb monitoring. If you're changing everything to LED, just scroll through the list and adjust everything that pertains to the rear lights to LED, and turn off all monitoring.

Check you out.

Incredibly helpful, thank you for the links and for the bulbs as well!

Inspired by this topic I bought a second-hand original pair of pre-LCI tail lights for my wife's X1 F48 (EU spec)
I have installed them with relative ease.
Professional has installed fourth wire (EU halogen version has only three by default).
Coded everything in latest version of Bimmercode as per incredibily helpful instuctions in this thread. Almost happy with result, but there is one thing I'm not able to resolve just yet.

Light position on dial is set on automatic "0".
When car is driven outside on a sunny day, everything is fine. Front daytime lights are working and LED "stripes" on tail lights are working too.

When car enters in garage (or is driven at night) low beam turns on automatically and outer LED strips immediately shuts off. Any thoughts? Help is much appreciated because I've exhausted immediate ideas and obviously I have to code something in addition to what has been done.

This feature of low beam turning on is country specific. Did you have it before replacing the tail light?
You can try vo coding using different countries and region and check if anything changes.

Thanks for the the answer.

Our car was manufactured in Germany (German model).
We're second owners.
When I was purchasing (second hand set) of pre-LCI tail lights I was careful to purchase the tail lights from the same market (Germany) and same model year (to eliminate "country specific issues")

I have not been able to resolve the problem. Since I found no apparent error with the coding, my attention turned again to the wiring. Maybe someone with EU-spec car can take a photo of wires going in outer tail lights? Maybe wiring combo differs from US model, expained in this topic?

Hi there. I'm new to this forum. I have a '16 25i X-drive and live in The Netherlands.

My car came with halogen lights. I want to convert the full bulb tail lights to pre LCI Leds. The outer rear lights only have 3 wires so the conversion kit instructions (4 wires) do not meet my car. I read that a few of you are struggeling with the same issue. Like the members inlinesix85, zeidroc, jkont. Maybe one of you have cracked it and can share it with me. Many thanks!

Takk mrpingu! This makes sense. I already placed two extra cables from the tail lights to the Body Domain Controller. So this should now be a piece of cake.

Hi InlineSix, I'm planning to do the installation this week. And will make photos. To be continued...

So today I did the final wiring and coding. The outer leds do not work. The outer bulbs are still on. I connected the new wires to slot 42 in the body domain, and the other ends in slot 2 of the rear lights. Maybe I did something wrong. mrpingu of others any ideas?

How did you code the tail lights? For F48 the coding is different for LED and halogens, LED conversion using bimmercode is not enough. There is necessary coding for mapping the extra lights that the halogens dont have.

I turned the day running lights on and the rears outer lights to led, like advised earlier in this thread.

Best way is to code VO-code H-wort HELC «Conversions to new LCI Taillights». This is What the dealer would have done when they would installed the official retrofit kit for LCI taillights listed here:

https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=03_5090

You can ofcourse set all FDL values by hand if you want but there are 50+ of FDL values that change when I calculate from my FA which has already has 5A4 Led Headlights (So preLCI taillights with only LED strip for taillights, rest is halogen bulbs)

Also if you did this via BimmerCode this is not correct for F48, their «Comfort mode»-coding for DRL taillights is incomplete. After turning this on for BimmerCode I always would end up with «lamp mapping failed»-error in the BDC fault memory.
When I VO-coded / calculate using 8TL «active front and rear daytime running lights» I found out the error was gone and the lamps (both inner & outer) work as expected.

Personally I coded, 8TN, 8TL to the car so that when car is at the dealer those codings are not erased.
8TN is for the option in iDrive to turn off DRL lights, nothing more.

In your case I would also suggest to VO-code the correct H-wort to the VCM of the car so no dealer can accidently mess up the codings. (E.g. If the car gets in for the EGR recall)

Edit: Unsure now, do you have retrofitted preLCI or LCI taillights?
If you have fitted preLCI taillights, please post all your mapping & PWM values related to taillights. You can use this document as template: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...456x__ZQ0/edit TAB: BDC_BODY lampmapping

Thanks again for your help. I installed pre LCI LED rear lights and did use Bimmercode. VO coding is not known by me. It seems this is more for IT experts. Is this kind of coding also possible in the Bimmercode expert mode?

Since I installed and tested the lights indoors, it is possible that the outer rear lights will work in daylight. But shut off when dark, just like the LED conversion that inlinesix85 descipes earlier in this threat. I will check this tomorrow.

If it’s preLCI the settings earlier in this thread should be working. Forget the part about VO-coding.

Yes all these values can read/changed in BimmerCode Expert Mode.

But test all functions of the lights first, like off, Parking light mode and on. Blinkers etc.

If the outer part still not work look up all parameters of and post them here.

MAPPING_PARKL_H… (H stands for hinten, meaning rear in German)
MAPPING_STANDL_H…
MAPPING_TAGFAHR_H…

Thing is that these settings of LampMapping er very sensitive with right settings.

I tried again but no luck. Outside lights do not work, outdoors or indoors. I'm fed up with it. The coding becomes too complicated for me. With the risk of changing significant data. Also because other members here didn't crack it too. So I put the original lights back. And sell the Leds. Thanks for your support.

If you have enet cable i can help you with the coding.
Here is the difference i used on a F48 that has same issue. You can try ncd1 parameters. Not sure if its the same match but it varies according to the vehicles configuration.
