X1 suddenly started locking itself

Hi all,

I'm looking for advice regarding my 2017 X1. A few days ago, it started locking itself after I turned the car off, got out, and closed the door. I didn't touch the door handle. Also, the door handle unlocking/locking no longer works.

I replaced the battery in the remote and then in the car itself as it was over 6.5 years old and the original battery and I figured it was time anyway. Yes, I registered the battery via Bimmerlink...just to head off that discussion.

In addition to locking itself, it then continues to try to lock (you hear the clicking and see the lock button on the door going down and up slightly) up to 10 times. During that time the key fob will not unlock the doors.

I'm thinking there is a simple solution to this but I don't know what it could be. Quite annoying though.

Thanks for any advice.

Have you tried removing and reinstalling the battery in the keyfob. Maybe you put it back together incorrectly and the buttons are constantly being depressed inside the remote?

Every time I’ve heard the issue explained as the OP…99% of the time it has been a failing CA door handle. You might be able to do a google search to see how other BMW owners have deduced as to which handle was acting up.

Sometimes a failing CA door handle can be warm to to the touch…but that may not be an indicator 100% of the time.

For a google search…I’d try a phrase something like BMW failing comfort access door handle

Thanks for the responses. This gave me an idea. I will go into the computer via bimmercode and see if I can turn off the comfort access. If I do that and the door handle is failing, I am hoping the problem will stop thus proving it is indeed related to the comfort access.

I'll also do the more detailed internet search.

Fingers crossed...

Yes you can turn it off several ways:

1. VO-uncode S322A
2. VO-code H-wort DCAF

3. FDL code above options manually using export mode bimmercode or BimmerUtility or whatever coding tool you use.
BDC_BODY
Code:
KM_SEARCH_TRUNK_DOUBLE -> Nicht_Aktiv (00)
CAH_ENABLE_TAGE_PASSENGER -> Nicht_Aktiv (00)
CAH_CAR_TYPE -> car_type_6f (6f)
VAM_LID_REVERSE_INDITCATE -> Nicht_Aktiv (00)
VAM_UNLOCK_LID_IN_PRECATCH -> Nicht_Aktiv (00)
VAM_ENABLE_SMART_CLOSE -> Nicht_Aktiv (00)
VAM_TRUNK_REV_ON_CLOSE_LID1 -> Nicht_Aktiv (00)
VAM_SMART_OPENER  -> Nicht_Aktiv (00)
KOMFORTSCHLIESSUNG_PA -> Nicht_Aktiv (00)
RC_DEFAULT_UNLOCK_AT_OPEN_LID1 -> Aktiv (01)

HU_ENTRYNAV2

Code:
SMO_CONFIG -> nicht_aktiv (00)
BACKDOOR_SMO_INSTALLED (nicht_aktiv)

Probably you can partly code the car, maybe turning off 'KOMFORTSCHLIESSUNG_PA' will be enough. If it is the passenger handle that is faulty, you can only turn off the passenger side with 'CAH_ENABLE_TAGE_PASSENGER'

The first time I read this I was like "California Door Handle"? Then realized it was Comfort Access. =)
Is it literally just the sensor in the door handle that fails?

Haha yes this is/was a common problem on older 5 series etc.. I wouldn't be surprised if this was your same problem. The good news is that you only have 2 handles that have it.. drivers and passengers handles...

I have not yet found the problem but it does seem to be getting better. My theory is that the month of intense rain that ended about a week ago caused water to get into the drivers door handle and foul something up because with each day, it works more and more like normal. The passenger side is pretty much good now.

One reason I haven't done much with it is the car is throwing all sorts of codes now including:

Today's fun...

P0171
P0446
102001
118002
1E0001
118001

Anybody know an exorcist I could borrow?

Not to hijack my own thread but I am almost at my wits end with this car. Never seen anything like it. At 91,000 miles is it ready for the trash heap?

That's a nice place to look up codes. Thanks for sharing.

Just replaced the battery.

Hi I had the exact same problem that I have now fixed. The problem was the comfort access handle sensor in the drivers door handle. I bought a used black handle (same colour as my X1) from a newer X5 that fits from ebay £45. It is easy to replace and the problem has been solved.

I was just thinking it has to be the door handle because the right one works fine. I just found one on ebay for 49 euros so I'll order that and see what happens.

How hard was it to install?

Edit: I know you said it was easy but perhaps you have a link to a good video that you used?

Help! I cannot seem to get the door handle back on. There seems to be no way to get the black plastic piece that pulls on the metal back behind the metal piece.

Do I have to take the inside door trim off? Now I have no door handle usage on the drivers door and this sucks. I can't find any videos or info on how to do this.

I'm a bit desperate here.

Did you order correct handle? CA / non-CA, they have different tabs.

To the first question, I didn't order the handle yet, just wanted to disconnect the electrical connector so the car wouldn't lock by itself.

The instructions look helpful. Obviously I did not have the lock in the installation position because for the life of me I couldn't get that damn thing back in. Possibly broke stuff but at least now I can order a new handle and follow the directions. Thank you!!!!!

I found out the hard way that non-ca an ca handles have opposite tabs/notches and tried to get the freaking handle in for several hours so I know how you feel. I however pushed the spring from the inside as the door card was off anyway once I found out which handle was correct.

Ok I got the door handle in but man was that a massive pain. I'm not looking forward to doing that again.

I might never get a new handle just because of the trauma this has caused me. LOL

Thanks for the instructions!

Since I got you guys here, any suggestions on the best shop manual to order? I clearly need to get one with all the crap going wrong on this car. Now I think I have a bad wheel bearing too.

I used a length of fishing line and if you have got the actuator lever pulled all the way the plastic piece on the handle seemed to fit in easy enough.
