Up in Calgary, Canada here. I recently purchased a 2018 X1. We have a cold snap coming. Anyone know anything about block heaters or that DEFA plug that on the front of the car? I read that it's a trickle charger and not a block heater.

Can be both.

The DEFA system constits of several things;
1. Battery tender
2. Oil / Coolant heater
3. Interior heater

Gotcha. So it shouldn't drain the battery or anything?

No it shouldn’t, it’s also in the order I wrote it down

So to follow-up. I purchases the NOCO Genius5 trickle charger. Plugged it in every few days while it was extra cold and it worked great. Re-charged the battery. Had to buy that because it took a while for the DEFA cord to come in.

So out of curiosity, how do I know the DEFA plug/cord even works? I purchased one, plugged it in, but there is no light or anything to indicate if it is working or not?

Not sure, I don’t have the system myself.
The battery is easy to test, see if you have voltage difference between pluggen in and plugged out on the battery poles.



If you have the oil heater / you maybe can read out the oil temperature with OBD reader/ ENET cabl.

DEFA has also an app but I don’t know if it was installed in 2018
