F48 X1 hifi stereo wiring ID - pics

Hi folks, I've seen the nice graphics that have previously been made for other BMW hifi and HK systems (ostensibly most applicable for the post-amp wire runs), but it seems the F48 X1 wiring doesn't match up color wise. Can someone help me identify these sets?

4 skinny pairs and skinny black single wire - assuming head unit output and remote:

5 thicker pairs - assume amp out to both fronts, center, rear doors:

2 larger pairs, 2 bigger singles - assume the under seat mid bass/sub runs and power and ground:

And here's all of em in a row just for the heck of it. Thanks for your help!

Ok, seems some of my assumptions at least were correct. Found an old thread with an actual pinout of the hifi amp (no color coding) and mine seems to match! But... I can't see where any of the wires go under the hood part of the harness plug! I can only see one half. Can anyone add anything?

I can basically only see pins 1-5 and 22-26. My larger black with brown and black with red twisted pair were pins 3 and 4 respectively, red with yellow is +12v on pin 5, then I was also able to identify the ground, remote, and other sub pair (blue with brown and blue with red). That's as far as I've been able to get.

Which audio system do you have (Hifi, HK) and where are the wires attached to (HU, amp)?

Some of the wires are in the attached diagram. Skip the section for F56 (Mini). The thick wires go to the subwoofers.

Thank you! It's the hifi system, all HU wires attaching to the amp and speaker wires originating from it. But, I just went through the process today of snipping almost every wire (in anticipation of an amp change anyway), and testing each pin. WHEW! Lots of work, findings below.

Alright, this was a MASSIVE pain so I hope it ends up helping someone else! Since I am changing amps anyway this weekend, I cut nearly every speaker/signal pair and single wire and tested for continuity at each pin, to determine what everything is. Technic's pinout was very helpful, but just didn't have the center channel included.... which was of course, randomly the first pair I cut and tested, which then temporarily convinced me that that pinout wasn't going to help me at all, hahaha

DON'T WORRY - the twist on wire connectors are only for testing purposes, I know what's up!

BMW 2017 (March) F48 X1, made in Brazil for US market, factory head unit and hifi amp wiring and color coding

FROM HIFI AMP TO SPEAKERS
Blue with brown stripe, blue/red = front right door. Brown stripe is negative.

Thick blue with brown stripe, blue/red stripe = right subwoofer. Brown is negative.

Grey/brown stripe, grey/red =rear right door. Brown negative.

Black/white stripe, black/purple = center front channel. Negative is unknown. pin 39/40.

White/brown stripe, white/red = rear left door. Brown negative.

Thick black/brown, black/red = left subwoofer. Brown negative.

Other white/brown stripe, white/red = front left. Pins 34/33 respect. Brown negative.

FROM HEAD UNIT TO AMP:
Brown/pink/red, blue/brown = rear left output. Br/pnk/Rd negative.

Green/brown stripe, green/red stripe = rear right output. Brown negative.

Yellow/brown stripe, yellow/red = front left output. Brown negative.

Purple/brown stripe, purple/red = front right output. Brown negative.

Single thin black wire is remote turn on.

Red with yellow strip is +12v, brown with yellow stripe is ground (at the same gauge as power).

Thanks for those. I googled for literal days, trying to find some of that info, and could only find info for hifi amps wired with differently color coded runs, and the harness that plugs into the amp obscures half of the wires/pin locations so I still had to snip everything to be able to test for pin number. But now I can tie the color coding specific to my vehicle to the pin, function & polarity, so that's nice

I appreciate the help, which I'd found that 2nd doc sooner! The first is handy, but doesn't seem to give speaker or balanced amp input polarity.

The 1st diagram is intended to be the "key" to the 2nd diagram, to match where the wires go/come from. The 1st diagram includes the front centre speaker.

I pulled the diagrams a while ago, for my own interest, from BMW ISTA+. You can install BMW ISTA+ 4.27.31 yourself:

Thanks again! I'll have another go at it. I tried when I first got the car but couldn't really make heads or tails of it at the time (coming from VCDS on an Audi).

Thank you for this post, it helped me tremendously when I did my sub/amp install a couple weeks ago.

By any chance do you know if the stock EQ (if any) is applied before or after the amp signals? I'm not heavily knowledgeable in audio tuning, just basic wiring for sub. The t-tap connectors I had were too big to splice into the the thin Head unit -> Amp wires, so I ended up tapping into the Amp -> sub wires.

I've since not been fully satisfied with the unbalanced output, as if there's a cutoff on the lower sub frequencies. Didn't know if it's stock EQ thing or I'm expecting too much from slapping in a sub without a DSP. Hoping you may have some insight before I dig back into the wiring.

I am not sure about if there is a high pass filter for the subs but I wouldn’t be surprised. The underseats subs are very poor in low frequencies, they are better mid-bass and that’s how they are also called sometimes.. Everything below 40-50Hz should be handled by a separate trunk sub. That leaves the question how the signal for the subs is altered by the amp.

What I do know is that if you have a separate amp in the BMW stuff, the Headunit output is flat and al equalizing dsp’ing is handled by the amplifier. How it is equalized, that is a black box. The only codeable parameters are the car model, depending on the car model BMW has tuned it, whatever that is.

Thanks for your response. So if I'm reading correctly, you are suggesting that the signal from the head unit before the amp is flat, and it would be a worthy effort to switch the taps into those wires instead.

Edit: I went and tapped into the yellow red/yellow brown, indicated in this thread as the pre-amp front speaker, and it was completely not right - strong low pass filter applied. I then realized pre-amp sub wire colors aren't listed here. Would anyone know which colors that'd be?

This should help.

It’s sometimes better to use the pins to be sure as colors don’t always match 100% on all cars.

A42 is headunit
A37 is Amplifier
B63 is Front Left Sub (ZBL stands for Zentral Bass Links)

VR = Voran Rechts (Front Right)
HL = Hinten Links (Rear Left)

These lettets should also help to understand the diagram
