We've had our 2012 X5 for a month, and right away I put a Thule rack on it, with aerobars, and a Yakima Skybox 18. A bit fiddly to get mounted the first time, but after that it's pretty easy to mount the box. I think the 18 is the biggest you can fit on the X5, and it works great. I also mounted two Thule Echelon bike mounts, one on either side of the box.

Is that the Thule Aero Rack? If so, how is the wind noise (without the box on it)?

On my wife's X3 we use Whisbar crossbars (very quiet) and a Thule Atlantis 1600. Wish we had gone one size up to the 1800, but I'm sure if we had, I'd wish we went one size up from that too . With just the bars on, you forget they're there. With the box on, you'll always hear them, but the Thule isn't too loud at all. Even with the 1600 and smaller X3, we fit a family of 4, including 2 small kids with all the extra gear they require, without much issue for a week away at the beach. This includes beach chairs, umbrellas, toys, pack 'n play, portable booster seats/high chair, double stroller, diapers, etc (my wife does NOT pack light).
We're going back up in size to an X5 soon, but that's more about wanting more room for every day use than just for vacation. We'll need the box either way for beach trips where we need all the beach gear. Without that, we wouldn't need it. Last edited by chrisny; 09-12-2013 at 06:56 PM.. |

So, Yakima sells a whispbar and there is a Whispbar company. Which do you have?

I like my Sears XCargo Sport 2.0 box ... affordable (about $200 on sale) and roomy. Removed the Sears name and replaced it with a BMW roundel emblem on the back ...

I saw the Yakima Skybox 18 (pretty sure that's what it was) at Costco the other day for $389. Is that a pretty good price compared to others? Obviously the Costco advantage exists but haven't done a search yet.

lol at the Packline vs the Sears box. Phew - could pick those two out in a lineup.

I have noticed the clearance on my BMW box on the X5M I cannot get in and out of the garage and constantly have to take it off. Not a big deal, but during the winter and if its snowing it sucks.
That low profile box is pretty amazing and probably gives you the necessary clearance drive through an 8ft garage door no problems. The pack line probably as well, but would I need to get an entirely new rack system? |

I have a 2012 X5d with the raised rails and a Skybox LoPro on it's way here. THIS is the look I am seeking & trying to buy the Thule 7503b's or the 9583's in black finish to obtain this look and be able to leave my cargo carrier on the SUV. Just having a heck of a time finding the 7503b's in the USA right now. I can buy a silver version but with a black sapphire sport X5, the silver cross bars would be a near-crime IMHO.
