Test Drove a 2007 Z4M Roadster today - disappointed!

Ever since they came out I have been thinking an extra 100hp in my Z4 would be the coolest thing since Ferrari introduced the Testarossa. Finally I am getting close to being able to upgrade and test drove one today. I don't get it!

Where is the massive extra power? The ride was smoother, seats felt better, road noise was less, but where was the power? I really expexted it to run me back in the seat, but it just didn't seem to be a lot more than my current 3.0i 6speed can do.

Thoughts?

Agreed....the powerband doesn't even appear until you hit +/- 4500 RPM. After that just hang on.....it just doesn't seem to quit!

There is a noticable increase over a 3.0si in handling and power per my experience. The 3.0i wasn't even a consideration after driving the M. However, I still wouldn't mind a good FI setup for it.

I guess that is why I didn't see the biggest difference. I just didn't run it that much at the higher range. Where we can test drive them doesn't allow you enough highway driving to really get on the car. Though, how often can you really drive a car in the 4500+ rpm range anyway?

I really enjoy a quick kick off the line, and 4500 rpm is not an off the line range for quick power. Maybe if they ever do the turbo charged engine then it would really be there, but not worth it now.

Not only that, this "brand new" Z4M had 254 miles on it, the brakes had considerable vibration when pressed, and there was about a 1"x.5" bump on the back bumper where paint was missing. It gave me the feeling my 03 was in better condition than this new M, and mine has 20k miles on it!

Actually, the M has a heavier motor in it. So although the 3.0si is the lower model it has slightly better weight distrubution.

LOL, i was gunna say.... I've never been in my car where i havent taken it to 8000rpm AT LEAST ONCE. And forget the highway there is too many cops... All u need is a nice back road....
The S54 is a race bred powerplant with a racebred powerband. If u want to feel a huge difference in low end power, perhaps a new corvette with its 6.0 V8 would be more appropriate...

I agree! 4500 comes quickly when accellerating. You can't get a true feel for this car until you've driven it close to the limit. It's almost scary how much you can do with it.

Even with the heavier engine, the M carries more weight in the rear than the front (49.3/50.7) The 3.0si (49.9/50.1) has more roll and a softer suspension. They are both great cars, just different.

Well the point is, is that it's nose heavy. After driving both of them I found it harder to dip into a turn to hit the apex. Handling in both vehicles are actually pretty similar IMHO. But the 3.0si felt better to be going into turns do to that fact. Just because it's an M doesn't make it the most perfect vehicle in the lineup.
