Official Release: M3 M Performance Exhaust Announced (Video)
BIMMERPOST NEWS Official Release: M3 M Performance Exhaust Announced (Video) M Performance Exhaust for BMW M3 * 18.02.2011 * Press Release New Accessory exhaust produces sharper exhaust note while reducing back-pressure Woodcliff Lake, NJ – February 18, 2011… BMW today announced a new M Performance exhaust system specifically designed as an accessory for the BMW M3 Coupe, Sedan and Convertible. With the racetrack and the street in mind, this new exhaust system is crafted from an extremely heat-resistant and lightweight chrome-nickel alloy called Inconel®. This flow optimized exhaust system reduces exhaust backpressure and allows the M3’s 414 horsepower V8 engine to produce an even more powerful sound. Inconel’s unique qualities allowed engineers to reduce the thickness of the tubing from 1.5mm to 0.8mm. This resulted in a weight reduction of approximately 40%, or about 20 lbs. when compared to the stock exhaust system. Inconel has also proven to be very corrosion resistant and has been used at the highest level of Motorsports. The M Performance Exhaust includes perforated inner pipes and polished titanium tips, which are laser engraved with the M logo. It represents the ultimate in technology and sportiness, accentuating the individual character of the BMW M3. The exhaust was developed using state-of-the art CAD and FEM technology ensuring optimum fit and OEM quality. The new exhaust may be installed at any Authorized BMW Center at a price of $4,374 plus installation. M Performance parts are warranted for the New Vehicle Limited Warranty period when the installation occurs before the first delivery of a new vehicle. If the M Performance parts installation occurs after the first delivery, the accessory will be warranted for the balance of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty period or two years and unlimited mileage from the date of installation, whichever one is greater. To hear, and see, the new M Performance Exhaust in action see: Here's our previously gathered info and media on the M3 M Performance Exhaust: VIDEO: Another video: (*Video is a merger of photos from Paris Motor Show and an official BMW released sound clip of the exhaust.) Here's specs: Quote:

Well it is inconel which in notoriously hard to work with, and the same thing F1 exhaust manifolds are constructed of. Why they choose inconel I have no idea, it's benefit it it's thermal properties... but the temperatures at the muffler are as high as they are in the manifolds (which are aluminum), so IMO titanium would've been the superior material choice.
I also have no idea why they are marketing the CAD & FEA stuff, I could make that stuff up in 2 hours. Whatever makes the customer feel justified I guess. The other thing I don't understand is the hanging balls muffler design, they should've changed that. It does sound pretty nice though, I will say that.

meh, can still see that ugly-ass muffler from behind. for that price you can get almost any good slip on exhaust system plus the tips look teensy tiny.
sounds good though, i have to give it that for props! |

How funny. When the first notice came out about it, I was beating up on it as ridiculous.
Now BMW's brilliant marketing team puts out a sexy official video and now I'm thinking... Sure! Why not?

The stealership will quote at least 2 hours of labor. 1.5 hours to make fun of the customer behind their back for purchasing it at that price.

+1 That's insane for nothing more than sound and -20lbs. Sounds great though.

sounds nice but at 4K for a muffler is ridiculous, whoever buys it has either too much $ or is just ignorant on the alternative options.

I picked up this exhaust because I'm curious about the sound and was able to get it at a very aggressive discount through Steve Thomas BMW (even below the price that GOLFFRR was quoting some people). I plan on thermal coating the canisters and then I'll post up a back-to-back video comparison between it and the Eisenmann Sport. I'll resell whichever I decide not to keep.
Stay tuned.

Love the video production. Love the sound. Sad about the price. Bring it down a grand or two and I'd think about it.

Kindof like stock turned up to 11 (better than the Akra slip-on by itself, IMO), but I like the more open sound of some of the <$2k stainless systems better. The materials are definitely a cool feature for any engineer/nerd type, but it's not a damn rocket so rocket materials (and rocket prices) aren't necessary.
