yes beacause at 37 you can have black ice on the roads espeacialy with bridges as they have air passing underneath them which cools the road and tends to freez even thou its abouve freezing. its just a warning anyway to just be mindfull that its cold and their may be freezing related hazards.

That is what it states in the manual. 37 is apparently the temp that water starts freezing.

I think it's a warning regarding your tires. Your stock tires will be hard at less than around 37 degrees, and you could lose grip around curves that you usually take at normal speeds. So, "beep" means "Watch out brah."

The beep at 37 tells you that things might be colder away from your car and there is the potential for ice. It should only beep once during your drive though.

its a warning from bmw about the tires. So god forbid u crash into a bus because no grip from the cold weather bmw can point, laugh and say " told ya so". I think this feature originated from the csl because of the street slicks it came with.

In short, no. I hope you guys are kidding. There are many, many BMW and other cars with all season tires that vastly out number cars with extreme performance summer tires and have this same warning.

It has to do with physics - radiant heat loss and how a road surface cools. At air temperatures in the 36-37 degree range and down to 32F, because of the effects of radiant heat loss, ice can form on road surfaces due to condensation. With radiant heat loss, the road surface can be a lot colder than air temps. When this happens, condensation can form and it can freeze if the road surface is cool enough. Smae thing on bridges only it's more likely to happen because the bottom of the "road" on a bridge is exposed to air, so it can cool more rapidly. Hasn't anybody ever noticed frost all over their car in the morning when the air temp is actually a little above freezing? It's because as the car sit's there, especially with a clear sky, the car radiates heat energy out into space and the surface cools down enough that condensation occurs and then freezes. It's the same idea for why dew settles, just at lower temps instead of dew you get ice.

If you guys dont know the answer, don't just make up a wrong one. If you'd like to know the reason it is pretty explicitly stated in the Owners Manual that it is the temperature that water starts freezing.

Hell if it was because of cold it would beep at 50, and 40, and 30, and 20, and etc...

My daughters old E30 does this as well, both of our Ms have been giving us the friendly warning beep for the past few weeks. My Mini does it too.

Thanks for the explanation onebluemcm
