Blackstone Oil Analysis Results

Hey guys. I sent in my oil sample to Blackstone and had them check it out. They are saying there is more lead and iron than normal. They found lead @ 59ppm and iron @ 20ppm. Universal averages are 4ppm and 10ppm, respectively. The sample that was sent had about 6300 miles, 300 of those being from me after I purchased the car. I'll send in another sample in as they suggested. Hoping maybe it was fuel additive or something that is causing the high levels of lead?

Kind of disappointing news to start the holiday weekend.

Car now has about 28,600 miles. Services were done at 1,400, 12,000, and 22,000. I changed the oil at 28,300.

Here's what my S54 engine looks like and it sees a lot of high performance driving school use.

I do all my own maintenance to include valve adjustments so I know it's done correctly.

A user on one of the E46 forums was working with Blackstone to try and determine if there was another way to discover the S54's cam bolts were shearing. One thing they noted was higher concentrations of iron in the oil. That's where I'd direct my research until someone else can help more.

Do you guys think I should notify the dealership of my Blackstone lab results and let them know they found abnormally high values of lead and iron compared to the universal averages for the S54 engine? Are they going to laugh at me or will they take it into consideration? My warranty expires at the end of March next year. Kind of stressing over it. I don't want to be stuck with this potentially ticking time bomb...

Yes, notify them so that you have a paper trail in case anything happens later down the road after your warranty expires... even though when you tell them it will be like talking to a wall.

I know everyones focusing on the iron in the oil, presumably from the cast-iron block... but I'm actually thinking the even higher concentration of lead in the oil compared to baseline could point you in the right direction. I have a feeling if you figure out where the lead is coming from, you'll know where the iron is coming from too. You should post up a PDF of the results like jmillet did, maybe someone on here will notice something. *shrugs*

This was my first analysis so it's really only the baseline. But I will be sending in another sample in about 3,000 miles.

When I went to the dealership a couple of weeks ago where it was bought from and picked up the service history, I met a really cool service advisor who helped me out. He told me he was the director of the dept and if I needed anything else to let him know. I'm going to take that badass sonuvabitch a bottle of wine as a happy holidays gift and also mention the oil analysis. Seems to always do the trick.
