TPMS Pricing Rant/Question
I have a 2010 135 which is obviously equipped with TPMS. When I purchased my winter setup last year, which included the TPMS, I paid $196 for all 4 including the valve stems. Now why is it that every aftermarket wheel company aside from tirerack is charging $400+ for 2010+ TPMS while 2008-09 cars are only being charged ~$200? Tirerack makes no distinction between the model years and they work flawlessly. What gives?

I'll take a guess. BMW changed sensors in some models in the '10 or '11 model year. The 1 series was not affected by that change but some folks may be charging as if it was.
That's one guys guess. * For example the '09 M3 coupe uses a different sensor than the '10

So the 135i uses the same TPMS from 08 even on the 2011? I know the E90's switched over in 2010.
That's awesome news for me as I was dreading the extra money for the newer ones. |

There's not much price difference in the sensors (initially I think it was a big difference) but they are different in some models.
The 135's are all using the same sensors '08-'11.

I've brought this up to a vendor on this site and they insisted that they were different. Some are actually charging $450 for TPMS. That's the cost of 2 tires! It's pretty shocking that they've been able to get away with it thus far...

Interesting. I've not shopped any other vendors for the sensors, nor do I know what any of them price the TPMS sensors at. What others pay for the parts will also influence what they sell them for. My comments were regarding the retail market in general and what could have happened in any given instance.

I asked Gill this exact question. Because I don't like the racks wheel choices. I wanted to get some VMR wheels and all the sites offering these wheels charge $400+ for TPMS. He said they are the same TPMS. You can buy the TPMS from www.tirerack.com and then order the wheels elsewhere. I know...I know...I wanted a one-stop-shop myself too. Plus having them installed already But $200 is $200 savings for the same damn TMPS

Did you read the thread? Just order them as if it were a 2009 and you can have your one stop shopping. Remember, there is NO DIFFERENCE.

They switched to a different receiver setup for 2011 at least. The sensors are different as well, but older sensors might still work regardless. I was quoted $66 per sensor for the newest Beru units being used on 2011 models.

For our 2011 128, I just ordered the 433 MHz sensors as that was what was offered on the Tirerack site. They were $200, there was no alternative shown on the site. Perhaps your 135's use different sensors? Wouldn't think so...

You poor saps...required by federal law to have in-wheel sensors (thank you Ford!). Despite having to guess which wheel is flat (when we had RFT's on the car), I'm very happy to have a system that simply uses the ABS / TCS to figure out when one wheel's turning quicker (ie: low pressure) than another and not have silly expensive sensors.

For the car, or in society in general?
Car purchase was nearly at par at the time of our purchase...and we had the M-Sport option then whereas the US didn't (yet)...so that's a wash. As to the differences between the US and Canada in terms of society in general, that's far more of an off-topic discussion. I just see the folly in a government agency mandating only one way to solve a technilogical problem, where there are better ways to solve it, at less cost. The cost of a set of TPMS sensors could be somebody's mortgage payment for a month...

Are you sure? Tirerack is selling the same 433 mhz sensors for the 2011 135s as for 2010.. Im having an issue with my 2011 135i tpms system not resetting after putting on my winter wheel pkg with the tirerack sensors. Could this be why its not resetting? If there were a sensor issue, i would expect to be getting system warnings instead of the small reset icon thats been showing ever since I started the reset some 30 miles ago.

I thought the new-er sensors were only used on the three and five series. Or something like that. That the 1er still used the old 433Mhz sensors.
Boostm3... you should go ask a dealer for a straight up answer on this. Or call BMW NA and ask for a engineer/tech dept to call you back. Dackel |

UPDATE: OP did you see the other TPMS thread....
http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=457431 Gill said that BMW changed the TPMS sensors half way thru 2011 models. Maybe that is why the price is different. Although Gill said the new-er sensors are $45 each. Not sure how the other venders are charging $400 for a set. Dackel |
