BMW "Buy Back Assist" ???
I'm looking at a 2011 X5 that is being sold at a bit of a discount becuase it was bought back by BMW under the "buy back assist program".
What does this mean? Sounds to me like fancy language for lemon. I asked what the problem was and it looks like various transmission issues. |

Yes - that means it was a lemon of some sort. The problem could have been relatively minor - the BMW "system" can be accessed at the dealer to tell you exactly what the problem was and how it was fixed. If you are informed in writing with the records and they are not too concerning it should not be an issue.

Carfax and autocheck note this thing, and it may be on the title as well. When you go to sell down the line a LOT of potential buyers will pass and move onto a vehicle without the lemon potential. The few thou you may save may not be a savings after all, especially if you do have a genuine lemon.
Isolated, easy-to-fix problems would probably not have made it to this point, I'd say. It could be ok, but why risk it? Ebay is full of former lemons being sold because the guy selling them got them cheap and knows someone will not know how bad the history can be in terms of valuing the car. All they'll see is a car that costs $3K less than the other ones. proceed with care. |
