Need some help/advice on getting key replaced
So my moms 04 X5's key does not work anymore, apparently they last about 5 years then die, replacing the batteries doesn't fix it. Dealership told her about $200 to get another one, do we have any other options? I'm sure we can get another key for cheap but programming it to the car is another thing. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, I don't buy the whole 5 yr thing. I had to replace a lost key, non-ca, and the fob was $140. You don't need the laser cut insert, just transfer it to the new fob. You don't need the dealer to program, it's stupid simple.

You're lucky anyway. Many keys are up to $1,000 (or more) nowadays. Anyway, if the key "dies", you always have the option of pulling the "real key" out of the clicker and using that. But, that won't help you with the alarm system though.
