New Winter Tires Cause DSC to Activate??
I just replaced the OEM 17in tires on my 128i with new General Articmax Winter tires. (205/50/17) I put them on the OEM wheel in a really bad snow storm since my OEM tires were bald anyway. They were great in the 5'' of snow we had.
Now even in perfect dry conditions my DSC is constantly activating on the dashboard. It activates on nearly every turn over 20 mph. It will also active anytime I try to accelerate. Any gear, any rpm range, and even in a straight line. Doesn't matter wether I'm starting from a stand still or just cruising in 6th gear on the highway and speed up ever so gently. Seriously 60 mph, ~2500rpm, 6th gear and I can cause the DSC to activate. There seems to be no problems if I use DTC or no traction control, but I prefer not to do that in dry weather. Anyone have any ideas what would cause this?? I did check to make sure the brakes are not sticking on one wheel. Any other ideas?? |

Once you scrub the newness off, they'll be a bit better, but obviously not up the the levels of grip as your summer tires. All new tires are squirrelly like that, just give them a few days, or scrub some tread off the funner way.

Relax, I just had the same problem with my Nokian Hakkapeliitta R winter tires when I first put them on my 135i, it took 200-300 miles of wear on the tires to get more grip.
To make things a little better during that time, I put 40 lbs of weight in each rear well of the trunk,,, I use high quality steel shot bags, which are expensive but very compact and clean since they are sealed in a nylon bag with a handle -- you can get them from any professional TV&Film/Photo/lighting house. You can get all sorts of sizes and weights, I have two 25 lb bags and two 15 lb bags. The weight stopped the DSC/DTC from lighting immediately, and I haven't removed the bags since I put them in. I will take them out when I switch to the summer wheels and tires, but i wonder if they would be useful for traction in the summer as well? |

I used to put two 50# salt bags in the trunk. Also, they can come in handy as well for other obvious reasons. But now I live in the south and not as important.

I will pick up some salt/sand bags today if I can make it to the store. We already have 3"+ of snow today, and it is supposed to keep going for 3 days. Wahoo, I love the snow!!
These tires work great in the snow!!! |
