need 1st gear traction...

My RFTs are just about done, and I think upgrading to a top-line street tire is in order.

I know for sure I will be going 225/40/18 in the front and 255/35/18 in the rear on the stock 264s, most likely RE11s or Z1 Starspecs, but running a tuned 135 in a 6MT, my #1 pet peeve is the lack of traction in 1st gear. For those tuned 1ers out there, will these high-end tires going slightly wider than stock help with my 1st gear traction woes?

Also, will "authorized" tirerack installers give me a hard time for installing tires that are not OE spec?

It's really the only option aside from going with a limited slip dif. I can't imagine 3rd party installers hastling you over tire selection.

I don't have a tune but I can vouch for the RE-11's. I've had them on my car for about 3,000km and they grip extremely well. I can take corners a lot harder and my launches are consistently clean. In the wet they are good enough so I'm very satisfied although I may consider a cheaper alternative when I run through both of my sets

In answering your question, running a wider tyre will help marginally, but the biggest difference in going from RFT to a conventional performance tyre. Also, members that have the LSD have only said good things about how much it helps with putting the power down.

+1

Pretty much the only thing you can do is get the widest, stickiest tires you can get, at least without a lot of other work. I'll probably be going with some PS2s come spring time in the same size as the OP wants.
