iDrive not recognizing .mp3 files

The last couple of albums I've copied to my USB drive, iDrive has not been recognizing the files correctly. In one album, it see all the ID3 tags wrong. I checked the files on my computer and they are all correct with the appropriate ID3 tags but for some reason, iDrive sees all of the tags as Various Artists.

On another album, it says "cannot play track" for all the files in that directory.

Anybody else experience this?

Yeah iDrive is kinda picky about what MP3s you send it. It doesn't support any unicode ID3 tags and for best results all your MP3s should be encoded in constant bitrate as opposed to variable bitrate.

Almost every MP3 I have is VBR. These recent ones are the only ones that give me problems. Not sure what the different types of ID3 tags are. I tried editing the tags using an ID3 editing program and it still didn't work.

Could you upload a sample of a MP3 somewhere?

Otherwise I would just try to re-encode the troubled MP3s.

I could try re-encoding but that will only make it sound worse since its a sample of a sample.

Just use an iPod. Then you can keep the VBR SQ. Sure you won't have it stored on your HD but I think it's the best option.

I'd rather not since I noticed a significant difference in SQ when going from the iPod to the USB drive but you gave me a good idea. I should load the files to my iPod. If it plays on the iPod, it should play on the iDrive system right? If it plays on the iPod but not on iDrive, I'm not sure what's going on.

There shouldn't be. My Apple Lossless and VBR files sound exactly the same on every player I try them on, even when burned to a disk.

But yes, if it plays on the iPod is shoudl play on a thumb stick.

No thats not true. MP3s loaded from the thumb drive is decoded and played by the iDrive computer.

MP3s played from an attached iPod is decoded by the iPod and passed to iDrive through an aux input channel.

USB for control, minijack for audio.
