Welcome to 1addicts! I don't know of anyone running the 17" tires in MA. I do know there are a few new englanders running snow tires on the stock 18" rims with no problems

I have 17's with all seasons and I get around ok, you'll have issues with 17inch performance tires in the snow....I belive that's a staggard set up and staggared is probably the worse thing you can drive on in the winter. get some snows

No such luck, I just watched the weather and they said we're getting more tonight...not much but enough to make me think we're not out of the woods yet. Good luck on your performance tires...when the road is dry you'll be having more fun than I will with my All Seasons. See'ya around

Yup, you're def gonna want snow tires. I have the stock staggered 18"s with snows and they're great. But you won't get anywhere on the runflats...

Even with no snow on the ground, the stock tires won't grip well when it's cold out -- below 40 degrees or so they're noticeably less grippy. If you plan to drive at all before the spring, you should definitely get snows.

I got a set of 17 inch wheels with snows (1300 from tirerack) and they have been great in all conditions. Obvoiusly you have to still drive slow and be cautious. Even on icey roads I was able to pass a truck who was having trouble getting up a hill. Just spinning away while I drove by.

well, i'm in upstate NY and i'm driving on the stock 17" perf RFTs. let me tell you, they are aweful in the snow. even in the cold (below freezing) it's like driving on marbles. i've got a winter beater i've been driving the past week because of all the snow, but i finally got the 1 out last night and today because the roads are clear. as long as you take it easy in the cold, it's not that big of a deal. it sometimes gets squirrely on on-ramps, but the traction control is great at keeping it in-line.. don't turn it off.
so in summary... if it's cold out, just take it easy. if there's snow on the ground, forgetaboutit. |

I suggest full set of winter rubber. If you can afford it with new set of rims, it makes it easier to swap out. But definitly snows all around. I tried the 2 snows one time and it was on a front wheel car. Rear end was swinging out. You would probably not have very good steering if you put only rear snows on.

from my understanding putting just two winters on front or rear is definately not recommended. makes sense...it's like putting two bald tires on with two new ones, It just shouldn't be done. Definately get a 2nd set of rims and tires. look around on the forums you may be able to find some good deals on rims and perhaps a good deal on tires. But tires will be harder to come by than wheels. I saw a member (not sure who he/she is) selling a fairly beat set of 264 style rims for like $200.00, can't beat that not matter what conditio there in. You can use them for your winter wheels and buy some winter tires all in for around 800.00 not too bad.

at the moment it's too expensive, I guess i'll shop around for stuff like that for now hopefully there is not going to be anymore snow in MA, Honestly I used to drive Civic with performence tire all around in snow with no problem. I wonder how much difference FR is going to make in this case.

FWD is much better in the snow. I drove down to NC the weekend before christmas (after we got that 10" or so) and it was certainly not confidence inspiring on the sport package run-flats. You really have almost no traction in the snow... I would keep an eye on craigslist for a set of winter rims/tires, sometime you can find some good deals.

point is that you really owe yourself some legit snow tires. all seasons will get you by, but snows are IT. my old car (98 a4) has become by winter car and through 6 years of driving i have never once been stuck. i credit that to the snows way more than to the quattro...and badass driving

BMW Military Program....Under dealer Invoice
Here is an email on the service I received from Mike Calton with Bavarian Motor Cars. I placed my order whilst serving in Iraq. I have referred several customers his way. First time I met him was in Germany when taking delivery of my new car. I am one of the few customers who get to meet him, as mainly his business is over the internet with serving memebers world wide
who take delivery of their car at a US Port. From: Jimmy Olson [mailto:jimmy.olson@] Sent: Thursday, October 16, 2008 3:51 PM To: Jeff D Cc: mike.calton@bavarianmotorcars.de Subject: Re: Assistance Mr. D, I purchased my car through Mike Calton while deployed to Iraq which in itself add to complication, However Mike made this the easiest and least stressful car buy I have ever experienced. I have bought several new cars face to face in dealerships and I truly believe that buying over the Internet is the easiest experience as its hard to be intimidated, not that Mike would ever do this, but Im sure you have been to a dealership and felt the pain of dealing with a new car salesman. The process is very simple and easy. You pick what you want or even close to what you want initially. Once you have decided you tell Mike and you arrange the initial fee for whichever car you decide to buy to get the car to start building. I ordered a 2009 and I think I started in Mid July so I had much more room for changes due to my car didnt start build until Sept 1st. After you nail down everything you want I would suggest arranging the financing or paying the car outright as soon as possible so you dont have to deal with that later down the road and once the car is built it can be picked up immediately. I would not trade this experience for anything. Mike is a very smart and motivated guy on Minis and BMWs. I was bouncing back and forth on either the M3 or the 550i. I had never driven either but have a friend that owns an M3. Mike sent me info on both cars and gave me his opinion. The best part is I truly feel he led me to the proper car for me and believe it or not the M3 I was considering was probably going to cost the same if not more than the 550i I ordered. Also Mike is like a personal assistant through the whole process not just a Salesman in my opinion. Anytime I had a question I shot him an email and I can tell you Im not an easy person to please when buying a car. I sent more than 50 emails pertaining to the car and Mike always had an answer whether it was what I wanted to hear or not which means Mike does not do lip service. He tells you how it is. I hope this helps you in easing your concerns on buying a car overseas. I would do it again and gain if the opportunities present themselves again. Respectfully, James Olson SSG, USA -----Original Message----- From: Jimmy Olson [mailto:jimmy.olson@gmail.com] Sent: Thursday, October 09, 2008 5:46 PM To: Mike Calton, Bavarian Motor Cars GmbH, Military Sales Subject: 550i Mike, Id just like to thank you for steering me towards the 550i. I still every now and again think I wanted the M3 more but the 550i is by far the better all around car. Its bigger more luxurious and I dare say much better looking, at least to me. It would have been a chore piling three kids in the back of an M3 for jaunts down the road. Maybe when the wife inherits the 550 I will go with an M3, who knows. For now I will enjoy everyone telling me, to include the local dealers, that I own their favorite BMW. You are an exceptional BMW salesman and if its possible for me to buy through you again even if Im in the states I would do it in a blink of an eye. Once again thank you for the true BMW buyers experience and making it the least painful car buy in my life. Jimmy |
