Rust...

I have noticed some rust forming on the metal hub where the wheels sit on in the back that connects with the rotor.. anyone else have this problem?? any solutions?... with these five spoke rims its noticable behind the wheel and I would like to find a way to resolve it!

thanks

It's part of the rotor and is unfortunatly just gonna happen. If one were so inclined I guess you could take off your wheel... clean off the rotor and paint it/coat it somehow with a black/silver/clear paint.

happened on my Z4 too. So far it hasn't happened to the rotors on my 1er, but I live in SoCal, so i'm guessing mine aren't going to rust as quickly as yours.

I was just thinking about how horrible this will look when it starts happening to mine. *bleh*

good luck.

I know...my dad also suggested taking the wheels off and painting it black....probably not a bad idea since I have black wheels now...

thanks for the advice

Yeah, I noticed it too. I am going to paint it silver with some high temp caliper paint. Most likely next spring.

Is this what you are talking about? The Rotor? I think I only see the tire/spoked rim/ and the rotor.

You can also just go for a drive, and use the brakes, that will also remove the rust.

But...
If you want, you can also buy chemicals to change the molecular structure of the metal.

Example:
http://www.evapo-rust.co.nz/

I think there are a few on the market too. I don't think you have to take the rotor off, you could pop the wheel off, then use a small brush, then rince after. I have never done this to my rotors, and I won't do it, as I don't have that much rust... maybe some others can chime in with comments. I do have a squeel brake, that would be nice to get fixed.

Acid
I found some ppl say use naval jelly, but it's an acid, and will burn. I would read the fine print and do some research before you use stuff you have never used before.

Warranty
Also remember the rotor is a part that wears, so anything you do, will eventually come off. Also many of us this part is under warranty, so if you muck it up, you may have a problem with warranty later, or at the least a fight with the SA at the dealership.

KISS
I personally try to use the KISS principle, so just a drive should fix it. Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for all the insight... The flat part of the rotor that the breaks hit still looks great.. its the part that juts out where the wheel actually sits on in the middle with the holes for the wheel nuts (this part the brakes don't touch)....

OK. LOL Anyway, with what I posted, you can find some stuff to take the rust off for a long while without having to paint it.

I tried some product called bullfrog rust remover... it did a decent job but I am very anal about my car looking good so I think I am going to end up painting the moiddle part of the rotors black...

that is until BMW comes out with some freaking perf. BACK rotors also!!!

Just an update... i took off my wheels taped off the part of the rotor that the breaks hit and painted the middle part of the rotors with a low gloss rustoleum paint (to match my wheels)... really simple and no more rust...

Great idea. Did you use the hi-temp paint?

Interesting question. Is it possible you'll end up with cooking the paint? Anyone know how hot the rotors can get?
