Installed new speakers
I installed some new speakers today to my standard hifi system. I bought 2 sets of 4" Alpine coaxial speakers
The install in the rear was easy however it was a little harder to do the doors. Once I worked out how to remove the door lining it didn't take too long. The front speakers can take 5-5.25 inch speaker so I am going to return a set of the 4" and get some 5" coaxials or splits. The sound was a lot brighter however it appeared to lose some of the bass coming out of the standard speakers. Probably needs an amp to drive the speakers a little harder. The maximum size speaker that fits in the rear is 4" with a maximum depth of 50mm. Most speakers have 4 mounting holes whereas the BMW ones have 3. The only speakers which will fit in the rear are the ones with 4 separate mounting tabs at is corner not ones with a full mounting sorround as the space around the speaker is limited. One of the mounting tabs can be snapped off to align at least 2 tabs however I haven't done this yet. The maximum size speaker that fits in the front doors is 5" - 5.25" with a maximum depth of 50mm. The depth is critical here as any deeper will prevent the window winding down properly. Again these standard speakers have 2 mounting holes. There is alot more space around the speaker here and therefore even speakers with a full mounting surround will be ok I also made up some cables with plugs to fit the standard BMW speaker connector and therefore did not have to splice the cables. I have some photos if anybody is interested. Just need to work out however to insert test between each photo so that I can put a comment on each photo. Can anybody help. |

DTNJNQ, I assume you meant to type 'text' instead of 'test' above? If so, just hit a double 'ENTER' after you insert each photo and it'll add a gap for you to put some descriptive text. Also, the font you're using is rather small, any chance of leaving it as normal size for those of us with tired ol' eyes (and monitors set at 1920x1280)?

I'm keen to see some photos. What did the speakers cost you, and do you reckon it's worth it? Is there a noticable difference in sound quality/clarity?

Cozza, the speakers are Alpine 4" SD series
I've only installed the rear ones at the moment. I tried the fronts however took them didn't install then as I want to try 5" in the front. The sound is a lot brighter however I think that an AMP is needed to drive then harder. The cost was $80 a set at JB Hfi as they had a 20% off sale. Here are few photos |

I'm eager to see you get some larger diameter speakers in, depth could be a problem as diameter is generally directly proportional to depth. If you can do it you'll be my hero.

I tried a 5.25" component speaker. The model was a VDO dayton MPS 1300. The speaker fits in the opening however the speaker is 50mm deep and there was a problem with the depth. It just hit the window on the way down. I think that a speaker with a depth of 45mm or less would fit.
These are some 5.25in that may fit: Component type Clarion SRS 1326 depth 46mm Alpine SPE-13CS depth 43mm Blaupunkt THC132 depth 43mm Co-axial type Alpine SPE-13C2 depth 43mm Cadence FXS-5524 depth 45mm Clarion SRR1316 or SRR 1326 or SRR 1336 depth 46mm The problem with the specified depths is that they are usually to the rear of the mounts. As the door speaker will mount behind the door card, the depth of the speaker needs to be measured from the top of the mount and therefore may be more the the specified depths |

Do you have the upgraded hifi in the 1? As I didn't think the standard stere had tweeters in the A-pillar as in your photos?
If this is the case, why did you feel you needed to get better speakers too? |

I have the standard stereo. There are no tweeters in the A pillar on the standard system. The location is there for the tweeter however, there is no cutout in the trim.
