USB Flash Drive... only some songs work.
Hello all, I've looked around but could not find an answer.
I have a Corsair Flash Drive with a bunch of songs on it. Only a few actually play, the rest it says "track unreadable". All of this songs play fine on my computer. Any ideas??? |

Are any tracks drm protected? (digital rights management) If they are you need to use an iPod and BMW iPod cable to get the car to play them

I've experienced this, too... I'm not sure what properties of the file cause this. So far CBR or VBR, joint stereo or stereo, doesn't seem to be an issue. But the odd batch of encoded tracks doesn't really work. I'm thinking maybe they were encoded with a strange encoder that added unusual things to the file header. LAME encoding shouldn't be an issue. Try re-coding your MP3s.
Although: for me it was a VERY small handful of files. It also didn't give me an "unreadable" message.. it just didn't play and froze up the whole system. Try formatting your stick (make sure it's FAT or FAT32)

Burn those songs to a CD in CD Audio format. Then re-rip them .. I bet they work then.

Could also be the bit rate of the songs versus the read speed of the usb drive. If the songs are high bit rate and the drive kinda slow, then it will balk or freeze with that song. I tried three different usb drives before finding one that worked all the time with my high bit rate (vrb) songs. I got a Patriot 180X Transporter.

Make sure the sample rate isn't something weird like 48Khz (i.e., dvd-audio)

Is anyone using a mac? I have the same problem and it seems to be only files ripped using my mac. Older mp3's converted on my windows machine seem to work 90% of the time.
Also, if I am patient and wait, eventually the album will start playing on the 12th or 13th song in the album. I then hit CURRent directory and then I can play all the songs without problem. I'm wondering if the mac is putting some sort of metadata in the file (album artwork?) and that is messing with the mp3 decoder? My friend has the basic audio system and he has no trouble with any of this files. Most of them were ripped with a windows machine. ? |

Sorry, but it IS true!!! I used an older Lexar drive which didn't work at all...it would play 30 seconds or so of each song and then freeze. Then I borrowed a Sony drive and it would work with lower bit rate songs (128 kbps), but not with the higher rate I normally use. I finally bought the Patriot after the reviews stated that it was really fast and one guy had a new 5 series BMW and was using it in his USB/Ipod drive. It works fine for me, although it does take about 20 seconds to load the first song when I start the car. |

Just an Update for my problem. My mac was copying the ._files to the memory stick, and they had the same .mp3 extension as the actual mp3's. The files could not been seen in Finder. Deleting the ._files in a terminal window corrected the problem. All files play correctly now.
