Controlling iPod through steering wheel
So, I'm still figuring this car's technology out!
My big question is, can I scroll through playlists, artists, etc. on my steering wheel? I feel like I need to write cheats on my hand! thanks

Not without Nav anyway, I believe (but may be wrong) you can configure some of the buttons with iDrive.

No, not even with Nav. Selecting / scrolling through playlists is done with the iDrive controller, although you (obviously?) can move backwards and forwards through a playlist in a next / previous track manner with the steering wheel controls.

I'm not sure of the newer models, but I will upload a YouTube video of how I use my iPod in my E46. I scroll through songs with ease. Takes me a matter of seconds to get through 100 songs to the song I desire

Aahhh ... that's the after market iPod integration, that is very different from how the 1er USB integration works. We get the actual names of Genre, Artist, or Album from the iPod, but you have to dial through the names, there are no fast skip through all songs that I have found. It scrolls about 3 or so names every time you turn the selection dial, so takes about 20 to 30 turns to get through my 100 or so artists.

I had an E46 and it is difficult to beat the Phatbox setup that was available for the i-bus system. For example, it used a voice to say the name of the artist, album, genre, etc.. It would also allow you to quickly scroll through the letters and would say the letter it was on as you held down the button. When you got to the letter of the artist you wanted to hear, you could scroll through the names more slowly (as it spoke them out loud). When you found the artist, you could play all their tunes or scroll through their albums. Several years later and I have not seen a better setup because it allowed use of the steering wheel controls for many of the actions. The only downside is that it lacked a display for the tag info.
In my E90, I had a kenwood keg that did something similar, but I had to mount a display in the ashtray and it could not be controlled via the steering wheel. It had it own voice index system that was very similar to the phatbox (afterall, phatbox designed both models and they were interchangeble if you bought a special adapter). That being said, I doubt I will go to the trouble of setting it up this time. Hopefully, I can live with the ipod interface, but I do wish it was similar to the PHatbox/Keg setup. I am going to hold onto my keg just in case. |
