Navigation/iDrive Display Issue: How do I keep it closed?
How do I keep the display from automatically opening every time I turn on the ignition?
When I turn on the ignition, 80% of times the display automatically opens. I have all events unchecked in the menu (call, voice commands, etc). I started to think the inconsistency is due to how I start/shut down the car. So, I did some experimenting with the variables below: -Radio on/off. -Shut down manually through menu. -Shut down manually through steering wheel button. -Turn on/off bluetooth. -Remove USB drive. -Seat belt on before/after ignition. -AC on/off. -E-brakes on/off. -Headlights on/off. -Comfort access in/out of key slot. -Shutting down by holding start button down. -Shutting down by double clicking start button. -Shut down car to radio mode. Still I can't point it to anything. So far, it just seems sporadic when it automatically opens or stay closed. Anyone with a solution? |

I doubt that. They wouldn't give the option to keep it closed if it will always open. Plus, it doesn't open all the time. I've started the car many times without it opening... it's just that I can't replicate that when I want to.

As long as all these boxes are un-ticked, it should only open when you press the controller or the menu button.

Hi there, I found the solution.
1 Allocate one of the programmable steeringwheel buttons to close the display. 2. Close the display with this butten before you swithc off the ignition 3. Switch off ignition. The display will now not open on switching on the engine. You can ope the dispay by pressing the menu button or th steering wheel button Goo luck Peter |

Everyone with nav, please do me a favor by taking the steps below the next time you take your 1 out. 1. Turn on ignition as you normally would. 2. In iDrive menu, uncheck all auto open events. 3. Turn off radio/aux/cd/etc. 4. Turn off A/C as well. 5. Close the nav manually either by menu or steering wheel button. 6. Turn off car by pressing start button once to get it to radio mode. Press it again shortly after to completely turn off the car. (as opposed to pressing and holding it for 1 second) 7. Return to car 5+ minutes later and start the engine. Let me know if your nav still pops up. Thanks. |

Update: After calling BMWNA and my dealership, they do not know why the nav display is automatically popping up every time even though I programmed it not to. I'm taking it to the dealership next week. They say the car will require reprogramming and will be hooked up to a computer for 8 hours.

Update: They found that the iDrive had overheated. Since our iDrive display is on top of the dashboard, the sun cooks it up pretty fast. This is probably why '09 model has it built into dashboard. It's even more important to put up your sunshade if you're going to park your car under the sun.
However, the initial problem was not resolved.

I'm having the same problem. I unchecked the ignition option but no luck. I like the navi. but I choose not to have the screen up most of the time.

Coach & Bullitt,
I just got back from the dealership and again no solution. However, I think I'm starting to figure out something. If you can, answer some of these questions for me. 1. Do you have comfort access? 2. Auto or manual? 3. Ever plugged in a USB drive into the USB slot? 4. When parked under the sun do you put up a sunshade?

Very interesting. Same here guys. CA, manual, USB plugged in once in a while, and I park in garage at home and work but no sunshades if parked elsewhere.
My service advisor told me that CA keys are programmed at the factory and that it has a list of options to check. Sometimes they forget to check things. So, he thought that auto-open is one of those things available that they forgot to check. However, auto-open is not once of those choices. Next, he told me that everything is saved to your key memory (last seating position, radio, etc) right before you press the start button to turn off. Anything you do after hitting the start button will not be saved. So he told me to close the nav before turning off engine. I did this but it the nav still pops up. You guys should try this to see if it works for you.

Some more detective work...
1. Comfort Access - It could be the memory stored in the key. Try your other CA key to see if it still pops up. Or, right before you hit the start button to turn off car, close the screen as described in previous post. Make sure you get out of car and walk away so that car doesn't detect CA nearby. Then come back and start car. 2. Manual - With clutch down I start the car...sometimes nav stays shut. But right when I release clutch and press the brakes....navs pop up. This only happens sometimes. It usually pops up right when I start the car. So, it could be something with manual tranny. 3. USB - I used a Mac to transfer mp3s. I'm not sure if something in the USB might have messed up the idrive. 4. Sunshades - When my SA hooked up the car to the computer, it threw an error that said the iDrive had overheated. The sun may have cooked the iDrive because lack of sunshades. I park in a garage 99.999% of the time. The iDrive must have overheated when I'm parked under the sun... that f*ing 0.001%. Texas for ya! Let me know what you guys find out. Thanks.
