Radio issues
So in my 1er, the sound from the radio mutes out after 5-20 seconds from starting the engine. I have the basic radio, and this occurs if i'm listening to radio, cd, or aux.
I brought it into service Friday, but they couldn't replicate it and therefore didn't know what else to do. It only occurs when the car has been sitting long enought to go to sleep, and does not occur if you turn it off and then back on again. Has anyone experienced anything like this, or know what it could possibly be? I was hoping it'd be a simple software update, but the service guy was clueless. :iono: Thanks... |

Are you guys saying that you are sitting there with the radio playing and the car off and then you turn the car on and it cuts out for a couple seconds?
If that is the case this is normal. Every car I have ever had does this.

No, not while you're in the act of turning the car on. It's more like this:
1. Start car (radio starts playing normally) 2. Start driving off. 3. After a number of seconds (5-20), the radio will "hiccup" with a momentary gap in sound. |

Have not had this happen but I do notice that every time I shut my car off with the radio at a set volume the next time I use the car it has reset itself to a low volume and not remembered where the volume was when I shut it off... kinda bugs me...

Yes, I've noticed that as well. As a digital signal carried on sidebands, it will be susceptible to carrier quality/level to maintain the content signal.
With normal analog radio, a reduction in signal strength or quality manifests itself as static, multipath distortion, lower volume, etc. With the digital HD signal, the quality of the HD content remains unaffected by the quality of the carrier until a threshold point where it is unable to reconstitute the HD signal, at which point the HD signal is dropped and the radio reverts to normal analog mode. Please forgive this very basic digital information explanation, as I'm not entirely sure of the specifics of HD Radio. Bottom line is, it probably drops just as much as satellite radio, and perhaps even more. |

This doesnt happen to my car, but the volume does go down after a switch the car off. But I think thats just something BMW put in so that you dont blow yourself away with loud music when you start the car
The one thing my radio does is that every now and then it picks up signals from other music stations and plays that for a split second instead of the radio station I'm listening to, it happens randomly and can happen even 40min after I start my car, really has no pattern. Its very irritating.... But it doesnt happen often at all, maybe once every couple weeks. CD's play normally

Well i sent this service bulletin into my service guys, thinking i'm giving them the answer they couldn't figure out. they said it didn't apply to me because this is for the basic radio only, and my build sheet says i have hi-fi. but there's another service bulletin out there for the hi-fi system where it experiences the same thing. apparently, this all requires a software fix, which won't be out until the september timeframe.
now.... back to which radio i have. i didn't order the hi-fi, and the window sticker says i just have the basic radio, but my service guy was convinced i have hi-fi based on my build spec. so i took a look under my front seats, and there's subs under there!! free hi-fi? i'll take it!! so i think everyone should reach under the seat feeling for the sub's grill... maybe bmw was giving out free hi-fi... I think the # and placement of speakers is the same between North American Standard and Premium audio.
I believe premium audio gives you upgraded speakers and amps (and probably also crossovers), plus Logic 7 DSP. |
