Strange Sounds?
Anyone else hear strange sounds..
mostly a humming noise coming from different parts of your 1er when the engine is off?:iono: When initially shut down, my 128i vert seems to "talk" for a while! :drinking: If it were a boat, Id be sure the bilge was kicking in! Also, while cleaning it, I might hear some of these sounds, sorta like a cat purring. Am I crazy? Anyone else hearing these sounds? Still loving my 1 even with the "presence." bski:roundel: |

Yes! I hear the same thing. I haven't took the time yet to see what's up. One of my noises starts when I open the door. It's the cd player spinning the cd if it's a MP3 CD.

btw, the other day, it was making a really funky really loud humming noise coming from the trunk area. It stopped after like 3 minutes so I decided to ignore it. Did I get the "Christine" of 1ers? |

I have the answer....
the noise you are hearing are the turbo's keeping themselves in order--primed, lubed, oiled, cooled, whatever you would like to call it--it's just the 135i's way of keeping itself working for the next 200,000 miles.
No worries! |

In many cars the electric fan will run to cool the radiator, especially if the car has been running for a while or in a 'spirited' manner. Don't know if that's what it is, but without the turbos, that is my thought.

I'd like to know how they do this, considering there's no electric oil pump... and in the OP's case, no turbos.

I am hearing it as well. The issue is, it is going on 1 hour since I shut off my car!!!!! Sounds like a small electric motor or fan below the engine. Makes sense if it is an oil pump or something to keep the turbos from frying. This engine is freaking hot!!! I wasn't pushing it hardly at all and the ambient temps were like 57 degrees F! How is this thing going to make it through a 90+ degree summer????? WTF!?

the electric water pumps on the n54 is surprising loud, i hadn't noticed until after i performed a coolant bleed after replacing a turbo on 535xi.
fyi: to bleed your cooling system, fill your reservoir and close the cap. then key in, hit the start button but don't start the engine. then turn your heater temp to max and your blower setting to the lowest setting. then hold the gas pedal to the floor for about 20 to 30 seconds. you should be able to hear your water pump and water flow. |
