Slippery seats/wheel after leather conditioner - looking for advice
So I usually give the merino leather in my M4 a good cleaning every couple months. I've typically used the BMW stuff (their Leather Lotion with UV protection) and it's worked great for the price never had any issue with it.
Unfortunately, they are no longer importing this into Canada, and I can't find it anywhere, so dealer suggested I use some off the shelf stuff like Lexol or Chemical Guys for Merino. I ended up getting CG cleaner & conditioner and went through the process with it. I am so disappointed with the results... unless I totally botched the instructions, all of my seats feel extremely slippery and squeaky, and almost have a 'fake' smoothness to them after the conditioner 2nd step. Even worse, I used it on my wheel (Yes I know... my bad), and the slipperiness is even more concerning there. I've tried buffing multiple times ,and even trying using a damp MF towel with some soap, but nothing seems to get this out entirely. Any tips on how to strip this stuff off safely and start fresh? Should I be looking for another leather cleaner? Thanks for the help. |

Almost all modern car leather is coated and protected nowadays. No need for leather conditioner unless this coating is worn off. Just cleaning will suffice. Some use hot water if the leather isnt dirty and others use a mild interior/leather cleaner for dirt or grease.
The conditioner is sitting on top of the coated leather... Use a mild interior/leather cleaner and a brush. Wipe with a towel. Rinse the towel a couple times during the process. I would probably recommend sonax leather cleaner with a horse hair brush for this job. Last edited by hC1001; 05-25-2021 at 11:07 AM.. |

Yeah give it clean with a mild leather cleaner and leather brush - I use Colourlock myself
Rather than conditioner, you may be better to look at a product like Colourlock leathershield or similar from another manufacturer

Thanks, appreciate the advice.
I cleaned the seats and wheel today with some leather cleaner and a horsehair brush, it definitely made a difference, got most but not all of it off. Will try to give it 2 or 3 passes to get the rest. And yes totally makes what happened given that the leather is coated. I had seem some forum posts in the pasts with members stating the Merino is uncoated, but this appears not to be true, I even did the water drop test just to convince myself as well, and as expected, just stays on the surface. Will look into a protectant instead of conditioner, thanks for the recommendation. |
