CLEANING LEATHER HACK!! Cheap and easy! Try this guys!!
Hey guys! So I bought my 2016 M4 used a couple months ago and I thought everything was already clean as is. So for the longest time I thought that my steering wheel was supposed to be shiny. I was even considering swapping my steering wheel cause I didn't like how they felt! Then I came across Tommy L garages video (if you're reading this you the real MVP bro!) on how to remove the shine from your leather using Mr.Clean's magic eraser. So I gave it a shot. My mind has literally been blown to bits. I have never been so impressed with a cleaning product. Ever . Here are some photos before after (left side not cleaned, and right side after cleaned). Took literally 3 minutes, and saved myself 1k from getting a new steering wheel! Try it out guys! And yes, my car is Hella dirty, haven't cleaned it in a couple of weeks.

buuuuut now the leather clearcoat is gone. magic eraser is basically a fine grade sandpaper.
My method is just doing a quick wipedown every 1-2 weeks with a soft microfiber and water only. Wheel is still clean 2 years and 30k miles later |

Not a good idea. It may appear good now but will ruin your leather over time. There are better sources of information than Tommy L Garage.

haha. you're in for a world of surprise. I did this on my first car years ago. instant regret a few weeks later.
I like Tommy's videos and appreciate the effort he puts into putting out content. But the magic eraser one is a big no-no. |

Magic erasers are a great tool when used sparingly, but you should start with the least aggressive method first. I have only had to use on leather once for a trouble spot that leather cleaner, all purpose cleaner and super degreaser wouldn’t get off (used in that order).
Some other good uses. I have used them on the paint of some of my vehicles if I have paint transfer from someone scraping/contacting my vehicle. Very light pressure with water or quick detailer as a lubricant takes paint transfer right off without pulling out the dual action polisher. But again, very sparingly with light pressure as it will leave a haze that requires polishing to remove. In all of my cases, I have been able to remove the transfer with no real haze left behind. Also, if you have shoe marks on the interior plastic kick panels or door sills that won’t come off with a normal interior cleaner, a magic eraser takes the marks right off with water or interior cleaner as a lubricant. |

Ha ha that’s funny. Thanks for the post. Honestly I am over three months into this mod and zero regrets.
I applied conditioner afterwards and all is well. |

Quote:
2.) the magic eraser is an abrasive. You're removing the protection on the leather and it needs to be replaced. Conditioner is not a protectant. 3.) this is not recommended at all for textured leather. The magic eraser is flat and you'd need to apply too much pressure for it to clean everything. Remember how I said it's an abrasive. If you apply enough pressure to get the funk out of the texture you're going to end up sanding it down and have an uneven surface. 4.) this should be a one time thing. You should not need to do this again if you're maintaining your leather properly. |

Use hot water, the hottest you can handle and dunk that with a microfiber towel. Maybe a drop of Dawn if you want.
Or use a steam cleaner with the triangle attachment wrapped in a microfiber towel. |
