Ignition cylinder lock barrel contact shaft

The shaft inside the steering lock assembly that runs between the ignition lock cylinder and the ignition switch broke in my 2003 Z4. This seems to be a common problem in BMW's, and there is a replacement part available for E34, 36 & 39, but I can't find a replacement for E85. Most places say I have to buy the whole assembly, $150-170. The original shaft is easy to remove, so I don't understand why a replacement is so hard to find. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Bob
