Zinc Coated Rotors

A year ago I bought some Zimmermann zinc coated rotors and I found them just in time to install them for an upcoming HPDE weekend.

I also got the idea of installing brand new PFC 08 pads so they can be burnished easier. However, on the post-install test drive, I noticed quite a bit of noise (not the usual squealing) and a vibration throughout the car. So what's happening is the zinc coating is being removed with small chunks collecting around the brake pads and inside the rotor holes. I plan on scraping those chunks off so it doesn't collect more.

Should I keep braking lightly to moderately to remove the coating before the recommended burnishing process or should I try something else?

I put new track-compound pads on new zimmermans and bedded them in on the warm up lap. worked just as good as my old worn-in braking setup and the chunks or something? you describe are still on the leading edge of the pad, but they work fine so I don't care.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, time will take care of it.

You didn't get any vibrations while the zinc was scraped off by the pads? That's the only concern I have as braking feels fine overall.

Only vibrations I got were typical pad deposit stuff on the first lap of some sessions and it was always gone by the 2nd lap and not there on the drive home.

Curious why you bought the coated rotors if you are going to be using these on the track.

These aren't meant to be dedicated for track, just a regular rotor replacement when I originally purchased them. I only do 2-3 track days a year so the stock rotors work fine for me.

Those coatings melt in the 550C range, at most. Get the rotors hot and poof, gone

I don't think the hats got hot enough on mine, but they're aluminum? anyways who cares if that part is coated.

Quit worrying and drive em. Then, if you bought from FCP, enjoy your free replacements
