Winter Tires
Hi
I am looking to purchase winter rims and tires. The local tireshop I go to suggested I install 18inch rims with tires 225/45. Installing a narrower tire make sense but I am skeptical since the dealer (& tirerack) suggest 255/40. Anyone else go with this size? Thoughts/Suggestions? Thanks |

That's way to narrow. You are going to hate driving on dry roads. 255 square setup is a good compromise and that's what most on here run.
My car is a daily and last winter was my first with the m4. Mich Pilot Alpin PA4 255/35/19 star spec. Never got stuck or felt unsafe. Worked awesome in the snow and still had good grip in the dry for when you wanted to boot it. Especially in the gta I find we get more wet or slushy roads. Cars handles it like a champ. I'm not concerned with overly deep snow as I don't venture out in it. Not because of the tires but because is car is low and it will hover on it. |

Yeah...no to 225s. 255 as mentioned, is correct ✔️

Have square 225 on my M4. Works great. Deep snow and sh*t. The limiting factor is not the tires but the front lip and the low flat underside.
To me, the narrowest I can get should be better as I want the tires to touch the ground as much as possible and not ski over snow or slush. Most here don't seems to have any issue with the wider 255 though, so... I have to say that I do drive hundreds of kilometres each week on potentially hazardous roads where there's not much around and more deep snow than slush or wet pavement. This year I will add spacers to sort of get the original stance of the car with its summer wheels and tires. Should upset less the traction control than with the narrow square setup. |
