What a let down at Laguna Seca (sound restriction)

Such an incredible course, but the 90db sound restriction is ridiculous. I can sympathize with home owners in the area, but I am just so let down at being black flagged 2 out of 4 sessions I ran today.
Not really interested in converting my exhaust to the Laguna Seca workaround style of piping coming out of my car's ass, so I guess Ill just have to check out the tracks Southern Cali has to offer.
Oh and if anyone is wondering, I am catless with an Akra rear section, and VF620. I short shifted and let off, but still blew a 96 and 94db. Basically I had no chance.

do you still have your oem rear section? it is ten bolts to take off, and i've got it down to about 25 minutes to swap.
i know dogbone used to run his supercharged car with an akra mid pipe, with an oem rear section. i'm not sure what he runs at laguna seca now...

Sadly I bought my car with the aftermarket exhaust(no oem included.) This is the first time Ive bought a car with any mods pre-installed, but Im getting old and busy with other stuff so I did the unthinkable. I should probably seek out an oe for just this situation.

For Laguna, I'm still using an Akra Evo X-pipe with stock rear section with my VF620. I had no problems on a 90db day last month, and I was not lifting while going past the sound booth. I only put the OEM rear section on the car for Laguna. I use my lighter rear section everywhere else.

It's worth mentioning that I am on my second OEM rear section. After 70+ track days over 4 years, the original one was getting louder over time. I was starting to have noise problems with it at Laguna. I guess it was getting "burned out" to some extent. When I swapped it for a newer less used rear section, the car quieted down and Laguna hasn't been a problem since. I try to only run that exhaust at Laguna Seca to keep it as fresh and quiet as possible.

Seems like oem rear is the key, that or pull off at the sound booth and offer the person in there a crisp $50 bill.

I agree with you about the sound restrictions at Laguna, completely ridiculous.

First time running Laguna? I've run Laguna a few times without any issues of getting meatballed (black flagged). I have a similiar exhaust setup, catless Akra...but I'm sure the SC makes your exhaust a bit louder. I used to lift at Turn 5 or go all the way to the left to avoid hitting the 90db limit. Now I just stay in 4th gear opposed to 3rd and pass the mic without any issues. There are ways around it without having to run those ugly ass Laguna pipes...because I refuse to run those as well! lol

You do know there are many other great tracks up here besides Laguna right? IMO, SoCal tracks are fun...but the track conditions are shit compared to the ones up here.

I think my '00 Civic Si's AEM intake would have honked loudly enough to trip 90dB depending on weather

Jeez

If your x-pipe has no cats and no resonators, and then you go into a stock rear section, it's gonna be a close call in terms of making it under 90db. You'll just have to try and see.

I do think it's worth starting with the OEM rear section and seeing what happens. If you get snagged for sound with a straight pipe/OEM rear section combo going up Turn 5 in 3rd gear at full throttle, I'm pretty sure you would be able to avoid sound problems by going up in 4th gear at partial throttle. (and move to the left a few feet after you go around Turn 5.)

Sorry to hear it ruined your day

I was there too, car number #111 (E92 M3, white w/BBK, Titan 7 wheels) in low intermediate group. Were we in the same group? I didn't have sound check issues, I'm a borderline case as I tested a month ago @ ~93.5 decibels at ~25 feet away. The extra distance (50 ft. at Laguna sound booth) must have saved me! Running Bimmerworld street muffler, rest of exhaust system is stock.

Definitely going to be exploring as many tracks our great state of California has to offer.

Oh yeah, pretty sure I saw you pulling off the track after the session while I was already back in the paddock pulling my hair out. You have a good day?
If I have another go there Im gonna have to pull a bit further to the left before the booth.

Yea had a great time, first time there so a lot of learning! Which run group were you in? And have you thought about just keeping to muffler mod only, keeping the rest of the exhaust stock? You might sneak by sound as I did.

My favorite video from the day was with my friend riding along - he's an instructor but was just driving with us. (6 co-workers) Also had a fun time starting behind my friend who also has an E92 M3 (session 3 video in my youtube page as well)

I saw this development go up across the street from a 1/4 mile dirt track. They started selling home in Nov when the track is dead. Got a nice surprise in the spring.

It's now a Walmart. So stupid.
