Have Pilot Sport PS2's on car, Dealer Replaced 1 with Pilot Super Sport

Have Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's (with late 2014) date code on my M3. Only have 7500 miles on the tires, they're fine.

Front right tire had a problem so the BMW dealer replaced that one tire at last visit. With a Michelin Pilot Super Sport.

I just realized this. Is this a problem? The PS2's are still available. They are 2 different tires though.

BTW for price I paid I pretty much expect it to be matched and they said they'd match it.

Unacceptable that the dealer made this call without your input. Personally, I would not run two different tires on same axle.

Different rubber compounding would be my concern.

They should be the same tire. That's just silly. The pilot super sport is a great tire, but run it as a complete set.

I had commented on this same topic on the M3/M4 forum.. it seems like the quite a few don't mind replacing two PS4S while having two super sports. Which on a more expensive car does seem weird.

I would still say having 4 matching tires is ideal. Having mismatched is just cheap/ performance is hurt and I said our cars deserve better than that.

Tires on the same axle should ideally match.

I would be more concerned with different tread depths than a slightly different rubber compound.

Agreed, tires on the same axle should match, you can have different fronts and rears as long as each axle is matching.

+1.

Tires on the same axle should match. Front/Rear can be different, but I personally wouldn't do it. My OCD would kick in.

Blaming OCD as the reason is valid. Ultimately, the mismatch between front and back and even the axels all depends on what you are doing with the car.

Is OP doing track days? If so, you might want to get all your tires to match.

PSS and PS2s are the same type of tire. They likely wear differently, as I too would be concerned with different tread levels (only if this is on the rear, there's not LSD on the front)

I say this b/c for one winter, I rarely drove my car (maybe 500 miles over 3 months) but needed cheap winter tires for the times I did go out. I had a set of all-season tires for the front only (left over from a prior season when I ran square set up) and I didn't have a set for my rears. I found a deal on winter snow tires for my rear sizes, so basically I ran all-seasons up front (matching make/model and tread level), and matching snow tires in the back.

There was no way I was buying $1200 set of matching winter tires when I only drove 500 miles that winter and I knew it was going to be my last winter ever with my M3.

Did I flip the car? No
Did I crash the car? No
Was the car operable in cold wintry conditions? You bet your ascot.
Did people make fun of me and thought it was odd? Yes, now that I'm telling you this story

Thanks all for the help. I was at a tire shop today (high end place, getting some tires for my Porsche...) and I asked the guy the question. Said Ps2's all around, dealer replaced w/ Super Sport. He said -- it's annoying but it shouldn't matter. Tires are very similar -- Just run it. Either way I'm going to call the BMW dealer tomorrow and moan about it. It was over 400 bucks for this tire mounted ...

With a mismatched tire?! I'll PayPal you $45 and donate it as a tax write-off to Kars 4 Kids

Flying Ace, that's funny!

NashvegasR, I didn't realize when you started this thread that they made you pay for the mismatched tire, I thought they were being cheap on a warranty repair. If they made me pay for that I'd have lost my mind, and then gone somewhere else to get the matching tire. I try to get my tires at Costco when available, for their warranty. I had damage to a sidewall once and they replaced both on the axle (for free) because their policy is the axle must match.

Having two different tires on the same axle will cause rod bearing failure.

haha. Well, I went back to the dealer last Saturday and they replaced the PSS with the PS2, so all good. Happy man. It was a mistake and they owned it. Free of charge.
