Which tires for wet track day

I've got a very rainy track day coming up this weekend (first rainy track day) and I've got 2 sets of tires/wheels to choose from.

1. OEM 220M's with Pilot Sport AS3's (245/35/19 and 265/35/19)

2. Forgestar F14's with Pilot Super Sports (275/30/19 and 295/30/19)

I wanted to go with the PSS, but now I'm a bit worried about hydroplaning from the 295's. What do you guys think?

PSS, assuming they're more than half tread and it's not going to be below about 45 degrees. If it's cold and wet I'd go for the all-seasons. The PSS will never get to their happy place

Yeah the PSS still have at least 50% tread - I will double check exactly with depth gauge when I get home. I should have mentioned temperature I guess Right now they're saying it will start out about 49 and will get down to about 42 by noonish.

Interesting question. I ran PSS in super rainy weather at Sonoma with traction control off.... and well, I spun from lift-off oversteer, so it doesn't make you invincible. Maybe try the AS3?

If you're going to be at 42F in the rain, I would definitely go with the PSAS3 -- and especially if the PSS have a good many heat cycles on them. I know the ones on my M5 right now have about 1/2 tread left but are 5 years old and cycled out a good bit; it's super easy to spin them on dry 50F pavement by just rolling on the throttle hard in 2nd gear for example...something fresh PSS never would do.

Slicks in the rain always make for a good time.

I would use the PSAS3. The PSS gets really skittish on cold pavement and those narrower PSAS3 tires should help reduce hydroplaning risk.

From what people say, the PSAS3 performs about as well as the old PS2! (which was an OEM tire for this car)

You guys were spot on. The AS3's were great. Especially as it started to get colder than forecasted (33-34) everyone was dropping like flies but I just kept rolling on through. The last hour they even just said open track and it was literally like me and 4 other people had the track to ourselves.

Sounds great, glad you had a good time. I assume this was at Road Atlanta? Those are likely the best tires for the event at those temperatures you could have had. On my E91, I recently installed 8.5" 219Ms all around with 255/35-18 PSAS3+, and today in 34F temps and rain, they had outstanding grip -- very impressive tire. Michelin knocked it out of the park for an all-season tire with this one.

I'd rather run newer PSS than old AS3s.

I do run NT01s in the wet...like a real man.

They're good until puddles form, then you're a passenger in my experience.

Of course you do, but you're from Asgard so it doesn't count.

My point was...you really don't need a "rain" tire unless you're running non-DOT slicks and there will be large puddles everywhere. Just drive what you got.

Whether there's tread or not...they aren't bad until you hit a puddle.

Agreed...I can attest to this from a recent wet trackday at Laguna Seca. Understeer and oversteer galore.

But they still performed better than my NT01s would've that day. lol
