that looks like it would buff out.
on a side note: I always think u r asking for trouble when u park far away, alone from everyone. in today's envious society, there's always going to be a dick that will key ur ride due to jealousy

I agree that the scratches can be buffed out. I park far away from other cars as well, and thus far I have been fortunate. It is when I park around cars that stuff happens. I don't agree that parking location makes you more prone to the envious. If an envious person wants to deface your car out of jealousy, they are going to do it regardless.

Assuming this scuff is not through the clear (which it appears not to be from the picture), start with a good quality swirl remover/cleaner. You want a product with some cutting power, but not too much. Better to spend a little more time working to remove the scuff than a product that is too aggressive.
I have tended to work scuffs like this by hand and then polish the area with a buffer after I get the scuff off to remove any light scratches left by the removal. Using a machine with too aggressive a pad/product combination could diminish the thickness of the clear coat rather quickly. If you are not comfortable with this, a professional detailer could knock it out in probably 10 to 15 minutes. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Yeah, I don't park far away either, because then I think the car is even more exposed.
However, I am very careful about where I park. I try to go for spots at the end of a row, and if that doesn't work, I look for nice cars to park next to. I drive my wife and kids nuts because they always want a closer spot (because you know, it kills them to have to walk another 75 feet).

Unfortunately many people just don't think about it. This could have happened with someone carrying a bag going by your car. I personally am a big believer in Paint Protection Film. My car is fully wrapped and I had a similar light scuff after a concert one night at about the same spot. Took a little detail spray and it rubbed right off.
Wrapping the whole car is expensive and maybe overkill for some, but I would at least wrap my bumpers. A good PPF takes a lot of damage before getting to the paint and its much easier to just have a panel removed and replaced rather than repainted in my opinion.

Something like this happened to me before I even got my permanent plates, except it was my front bumper and they took the paint off. People are idiots.

I'm originally from Irvine. Went back for a visit about 6 month ago and noticed plenty of new development (residential and commercial).
The population seems to have also increased by quite a bit (significantly more difficult to find parking in the various plazas). Was driving around in a Prius, so didn't pay much attention to how considerate other drivers are when parking. PSA: There's a 76 station near UCI that has 100 octane at one of the pumps. |
