6mt not shifting

Hi guys n gals, I have a question about my f80. So I have had my car for 2 months, it's a 15' with 18k miles now(purchased with 15,500 miles).

- I typically drive in sport/sport/sport

If I redline(or get closer to redline) 1st n shift into 2nd, my tranny just goes dead. Like wont shift into any gear(quite embarrassing, seems like your missing shifts), it's happened a handful of times.

I remember reading somewhere on here bout something like this, but can't find it, anyone know the issue or fix?

Greatly appreciate the help, thanx

I don't really understand, you mean you can't get it in second? Never had that problem..

Pull straight down instead of down and to the left.

Sounds like you're trying to yank the shift lever. Ease up and be more deliberate. There's a notch you can catch if you are too violent.

But why would it prevent me from going in to third?

Are you sure you're pushing the clutch all the way down? If the clutch isn't totally engaged, you will have problems getting the transmission into gear.

Your post makes no sense. Is it grinding?

If you don't push the clutch all the way in, it should grind at the least. Not sure what you are trying to describe here.

It shouldn't. I was referencing the 1-2 shift issue some people have had.

You're not giving us a whole lot to go on here. Sounds like a trip to the dealership may be the best course of action for you.

What does "my tranny goes dead" mean? It's not a battery or motor - it has no power of it's own. What are you describing??

If the better wording is "my car goes dead" then I'd wager DSC cutting power after engaging second gear and applying full throttle (I'm assuming full throttle because of the OP's comment about redlining first gear).

Basically it locks into gear and acts like it's in neutral. It's not my first manual car, I've owned over 35 cars in 13 years, all kinds and at least 10 have been manual with two with stage two clutches. I give it has and all it does is rev and that's it.

You can't shift as fast in these cars, give it half a second before you fully bring it down into 2nd. For me at least it works. I know on my E46 m3 you can shift instant, on my f80 you have to go slower.

Thanx, I'll try that, I'm so used to ripping gears, when being extra spirited on the streets.

Anyone know if a short shift kit will help?

First couple shifts after changing over from the e46 m3 to the f80 m3 when i tried to "rip" first to second it would grind. Maybe its just my car, 17k miles, but you have to be a bit slower. I have even gone so quick I go from first to redline and try to shift down to 2nd only to find 2nd didn't engage and when I press the gas it free-revs. All other gears you can shift as fast as you want. I know have the timing down right to get it most of the time, without loosing momentum, there is so much torque in first taking a second to shift 2nd won't loose speed.

Cool, glad I'm not the only one, thought I was crazy. One of my boys like u missed second I was like not really! I think you also may have described it a little clearer for those who weren't understanding what I was trying to say.

Thanx
