So I leased a new car...

A 2015 electric smart car! I know it's stupid looking, but it is so cheap I couldn't say no. It's just to go to work and back and keep some wear off the m3.

Cost me $1,000 but California is giving me $2,500 for taking it off the lot (profit lol), and this thing costs $86 a month. 10,000 miles, three years. It's is going to pay for itself just in the gas savings each month.

Just one pic so far. No mods planned.

Can't argue with the numbers. But that thing is a coffin on wheels if you hit a anything larger than a bug over 20mph, then again, can it do 20mph?

it can do 80-85 mph and not feel like its falling apart! my foot is on the floor, yea, but it can do it! hahaha
surprisingly, the electric version has more pep at lower speeds than most 4cyl economy cars.

yep, that car in the background is my girlfriend's 335d. the m3 was in the garage. the rock crawler in the background is also mine. the smart car is definitely the step child of the group.

Still kicking myself on the 500e lease deal earlier this year.

36mon lease w/ 10,000miles/yr

MSPR: $32,000
Residual value: $13100
Fiat Chrysler Limited Time Promo: -$2100
Federal Tax Credit: -$7500 (taken out during purchase)
State Tax Rebate: (CA) -$2500 (rebate)
Proof of a current lease with another OEM: -$1000
Total down: $0
Monthly payment: $82.75

For CA owners, the "Tesla Math" usually leads people to buy ev cars without understanding the costs of electricity which will bring consumption to Tier 4 costs, which equates to about $4/ gallon of gasoline (40 cents per kilowatt hr)

$86/month and $1500 in your pocket @ 10k miles a year for three years? That $1500 is paying for the first year and a half of car payments. Can't argue with that. You got a steal. If I could bring myself to drive one of those ridiculous things I would seriously look into this same thing.. I am seriously looking at getting a third car to daily drive so I can detail the M3, put it in the garage and stare at it. No deals like this around here though, at least not that I am aware of, so Ill probably end up buying an older Audi A4 for a couple grand and be done with it.

i'm going to keep track of my electricity usage to see what my actual costs are. i know socal edison gives a separate meter that bills at a lower tier for electric car users. not sure what you have in norcal (pg&e?) or if they have a similar program. i have also heard of rebates for solar panels dedicated to the car. i'm charging it using the 120v in my garage.
i'm a low user, with my bill being about $35-55 a month year round. i don't get into the upper tier.

the only thing i'm having a hard time adapting to is i have to use a key to unlock and start it. i got used to the comfort access and taking they keys out of my pocket now is annoying.

another pic for kicks.

I picked up a 500e on this deal as one of the "100 racers" (from the article about us leasing Fiats). Such a no brainer for me given I charge for free at work and my round trip commute is only 30 miles. With not driving my M3 as a DD, this deal is actually saving me money with a free car for 3 years that my wife loves on the weekends.

Oh and congrats on the Smart. I was actually surprised at how "roomy" the 500e is in inside, but it has a horrible blind spot haha.

good job, anytime you can get subsidized charging, it's makes EV a no brainer.

thanks. did you drive a smart electric? i drove a 500e and the smart seemed to be larger inside, but no back seat (not planning on more than two people anyways). 500e looks better than the smart, no debate there. i liked the 500e a bit more, but the smart was much cheaper, and that is what i was after.

Oh yea I forgot the smart has no rear seats. That would probably mean the 500e would be better since there might be 3 people occasionally.

Rear seats are a novelty in the 500e. I think it has less room because of the batteries. Drive both.
I'd rather be rocking the fiat, but I was focused on the lowest cost and have no intent to carry passengers.

totally agree, with the rebate it's such a deal. Been seriously thinking of getting this or the 500e too, it'd make perfect sense for short distance daily commute, not mentioning parking that thing is such a breeze. Rented one a few years back and we actually tried parking it head in, at meter parking by the curb, just for shits and giggles, and it fits!

Would you mind comment on how is insurance cost tho? I understand everyone's situation/driving status/elected coverage can be different, but have heard from someone who got the 500e deal saying that his monthly insurance actually cost more than the lease payment....
