just did exhaust valve mod

via disconnecting the connectors under the muffler. car sound 10000x better. everyone should do this its night and day especially on downshifts. I have a couple questions:

does this mess with the warranty at all? I already had to get my muffler replaced because one of the valves was loose.

and does this effect the power delivery of the car?

You'll be fine, if anything - it might raise a couple of eyebrows at the dealer but there's nothing you did that can't be reversed.

Power is not affected.

Fecking vandals. Pulled those plugs and taped the ends ... Just can't trust anyone anymore I guess.

Can someone explain how this makes the car sound better compared to driving in Sport+ which also opens the valves?

I really want to do this one day. I do. I'm just enjoying the stock exhaust sounds right now, waaaaaaay beyond what I thought was ever possible.

The first mod I had planned was the M performance exhaust. I almost purchased one before Emmy car ever arrived. That's how bad I was expecting the stock f80 exhaust to sound.

All the spy shot leaks and cameo videos we heard prior to the cars unveiling, any iPhone videos you've heard and most of the crap on you tube is just that. Crap! Total and utter crap! The car sounds so much better in real life, it's not even funny! This must be the one understated thing about this car. The one thing I was not expecting to be of any substance, but in reality just totally blew me away!

I will still do the valve mod one day, but for now, I'm enjoying the stock exhaust for what it is. JUST RIGHT!

You have to disconnect when the motor is warm and sport plus is on so they're open. Look into the exhaust to make sure they're open before disconnecting.

Or just pick this thing up, worth the money imo with the additional firmware features being added in by BMS. I've had this for a month now, so convenient to go slient or loud when I want to.

Put it on sport+ and drive around for a few minutes. Shut the car off while still in sport+ mode. Then look in your exhaust pipes to make sure the valves are open. Then disconnect the plugs.

The valve mod is awesome. Call me a jerk, but I love the loud, aggressive cold start sound. The leaf blower/lawn mower sound it used to have with closed valves is the absolute WORST thing about this car. Glad it's gone forever!!

Agree with you on everything, this mod is awesome. But I'm starting to get use to it and am thinking of an exhaust possibly or just downpipes. But if I don't do it no biggie, it's way better then valves closed.

Anyone knows when the valves close and open in Sport+?

I'm tempted to do the mod, but there are instances when I wouldn't want it to be any louder. I suspect my neighbours already hate me because of the cold start. If I ever have to get up very early for a flight or something, I will wake up half of the residents. I can't imagine driving for hours on a motorway with loud exhaust is fun either.

If the valves only stay close when the engine is warming up and stay open when I drive aggressively in S mode, then this mod seems completely pointless and just makes the car less useful.

I also just did it yesterday. Much better. Not too loud. Normal driving is not too loud. I see little reason to be able to control open vs closed(maybe just for cold start).
Still don't fully understand when the valves normally open in sport +, if it's only under load then why are they open when you turn off the car to do the valve unplug?

Sport+ for me always keeps the valves open

The only difference is that the car starts with the valves closed but you can quickly open them buy hitting M1 (just need to give a little gas after and they open up).

It takes about 5 minutes to disconnect the valves. Why not just give it a try to see if you like it?

I was told by a BMW tech that the valve does more than just control the sound and is related to the performance as well (?back pressure). I re-plugged mine after awhile as the noise got old and my wife hated it. On cold start ups she would say "what's wrong with your car?"

interesting read here

http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=979417

I feel like the power delivery is a little different at very low rpm's but that may be just me...I just want to make sure I'm not messing anything up with the car by always keeping the valves open.

also interesting that a poster above said a tech told them the valve control somehow affects the power

Just did mine. Start up is epic, lol! But then she quiets down. Sounds much better with values open all the time!
