Disabling Cold Start
Has anyone done or does anybody know if you can disable the cold start in the F8X M3/M4? I have muffler and resonator delete and on cold start, it's LOUD. After cold start though, it's just right. In doing a forum search, I've seen that it's possible to code the E46 M3 to disable the cold start, which makes me believe it can be done.
Let me know if you guys have done it or know how to. I was told that perhaps the only way to disable it is to get the ECU flashed. I'd rather not... Thank you! |

I'd like to know the same. Love the valves-open cold start sound but if I do any exhaust mods to my stock exhaust I'll need to get rid of the cold start sequence or risk angry neighbors.
As far as I know it is mostly to heat the cats up for emissions, right? |

Yes, it's for emissions. To warm up the cats.

Flash seems the only way right now. I have mine turned off and if it wasn't it would be terribly loud with the catless dp's and valves open. One thing I noticed is that on cold start the exhaust smell is pretty strong until the car warms up. I still have the secondary cats and once they are warm the smell is a lot less noticeable.

I believe the ESS flash tune does as well, not 100% would have to check with Roman@ESS or Tom@EAS(he is running the ESS flash now)

Did the Gintani flash change your exhaust sound/tone at all? Other than no cold start, obviously. I hope the sound doesn't change because I am very happy with the tone of mine already. Just want the cold start gone. |

until the flash are through the port I will stick with the ESS piggy back. I don't want to mess with removing the ECU etc.. not for me. I get so many new cars and my cars are documented and I don't think that is something I want to mess with when it comes time to sell my car. The piggy for me works great. Its a simple mod that is easy to take off and remove for my next car in a matter of moments

Btw, I just spoke to Roman at ESS and he confirmed that the piggyback does not disable the cold start. Only the flash. |
