axle back vs cat back

Is there any sound advantages of an axle-back versus a cat back system? I know there isnt a performance advantage, but is there a sound difference?

I am considering picking up a Remus axleback. Its about $600 cheaper than the catback. If there is no difference in sound, I will simply buy the cheaper setup.

My opinion:

Catback will remove both a resonator as well as the secondary cats. This will improve HP. Sound quality differs from exhaust to exhaust.
My plan is: downpipes, mid pipes and stock axle back with Magnaflow 4" tips.

Catback will give you a more refined , louder tone. Also more weight saving.

I will go for the same route, but it's only because I don't like the stinky smell.

Sorry OP I don’t mean to thread jack but I think this is OK since its on topic.

I’m also curious about the catback vs axle back options, but let me reshape the question from this perspective. I don’t care about performance gains at all. This car already has plenty for me. I’m most interested in having a better “this is an effin sportscar” tone but the system cannot have any more 75-85mph drone than the stock system. Whichever system that fits this bill for the lowest cost will win my business.

It would be really hand to have a reference 75-85 mph db range for the stock system and then have similar spl ratings for the aftermarket systems. I know not everyone cares about drone but I would surmise that most do care.

Having said all that, I still haven’t heard the stock system so its possible that I might be able to get away with a simple valve mod or one of the many assorted aftermarket valve control units. For now I sit and wait and read bimmerpost.
