Wastegate rattle

So I posted the other day mentioning how I have been hearing a rattle under load around 1300-2000 rpms. I only started to hear this noise after I installed my downpipes. I took it back to Autocouture, where it was installed, just to make sure there were no leaks or anything. They were great as always, and were able to locate the issue. But to my luck, theres no easy fix.

Apparently the wastegate on the rear turbo is rattling at certain rpms. I figured this was the case because wastegate rattle is very distinct. Now im not sure what I should do considering I have downpipes on and probably cant take it back to the dealer. Has ANYONE had this issue? I have not heard of anyone having this problem during my searches. All advice appreciated.

You have two options.

1. Return the downpipes to stock and take it to the dealership.

2. Find somebody at your local dealer that will "turn a blind eye" to the DP mod and will still fix the issue.

Does this "rattle" sound just like a typical Heat-shield buzz? I hear it right around 1700 RPMS, and I'd really hate to think that it was turbo (or wastegate) related.

I had this issue on my N54 355i back in the day. I was hoping the S55 wouldn't have this issue. How many miles on your car? It would show up around 40-60k on the N54. Using an exhaust wrap on the pipes helps. Double wrap it for the most effect.

So, all of downpiped s55 will rattle at 1500-2200 rpm?
I have MPE and downpipes installed. And I guess I hear this rattle only at this specifc RPM on load. Is there a solution for this?

Bringing the thread back from the dead! I got rid of my car (thank god) and this noise never went away. I really hated the M4 so much. I know many love the F8x, but after 3 years of ownership, in my opinion, M division was killed after the e9x.

Im was sorry too. It just wasn't the same. I missed my e92 M3 through the whole 3 years. The F8xs are just not that special to me. No more bespoke motors. I got rid of my e92, regrettably, because i feel for the "more power=more fun" but that couldn't be any further from the truth. The linear power delivery and hydraulic steering of the e92 and Ms before that (e39M5 , e46M3) is what made them such special cars and put them over MB, Audi, and other companies. BMW was always the "true drivers" car. Now BMW is just moving into gaudy, flashy cars that are all about horsepower numbers. Previous Ms are a different world from what M division is pushing out now.

This is all just opinion but eh way. Just why I got rid of my F8x. There is no doubt that the F8x is very respectable and very fast, but it just not M to me anymore. Once the N54 came out and people started complaining that a tuned N54 was faster than a S65 M3, they turned a chapter.

So to be clear, you also had this rattle after installing downpipe, right? I have mine for almost two years... And that is the only thing I dont like about this car.
But I guess it will stay there for ever... Just how it works, right?

I don't hear any such rattle. I read on the earlier models the ebrake cable would rattle against the driveshaft but was easily fixed by the dealership. I have also read about downpipes installed touching something and causing rattles. I have also read about the wastegate causing noises as well as the exhaust valves. Either I don't have it, I don't know what sound to listen for, or my exhaust is too loud to hear it.

Maybe the solution is to get a loud exhaust?

Yes, change cars. Mine does it too, bone stock except M Performance exhaust. It's the most annoying sound and BMW will not fix it

What are you basing this on? Does yours do it also and if so aren't you worried it will get worse to the point where turbo would fail?

Its a faint rattle, only usually heard if im driving by a wall and accelerating during a specific rpm..

I have been in numerous S55 cars with this specific faint rattle...

If it was rattling during cold starts, idle, decel, wide range of rpm's, id be a little more open to dive deeper.

Thanks, mine rattles at 1900-2000 rpm for a split second. Never knew this would be acceptable on such an expensive car. I am able to reproduce it constantly if I brake throttle at that specific rpm. Tech said there is a little play in the actuator shaft that is vibrating at a specific frequency on the front turbo. It's been doing this since day 1 and hasn't gotten worse although it does always get louder when the car is properly warmed up after a few hard pulls on hot days.

Listen to some N55 cold starts and other bmw turbo engines.. those can really get annoying...

Or go for a ride in a N54, king of wastegate rattle lol

So basically this could go on forever without really turning into a turbo failure?

Yes I am familiar with the N series engines, I had an 09 335 with the N54 and a 2013 335 with the N55. I'm really starting to hate turbo cars, this will probably be my last if I can help it.

Reviving this thread.....has anyone gotten 100% confirmation that the wastegate is the source of this rattle? I find it peculiar that once exhaust work is performed it starts up. In my case all I did was change the OEM exhaust to the M Performance exhaust and that's when I started noticing it. I had the noise looked at by a BMW master tech and he is convinced it is NOT wastegate.

Thoughts?
