studded tires?

anybody running studded winter tires? just curious, post some pics if you can

I currently have the ContiDWS but have been thinking about switching to dedicated winters next season. Contis are great don't get me wrong, but highway and ice i don't think they can go past 30-40mph

Wish the OEM rims just freaking had winter tires that fit them

Studded tires are great on packed snow and ice, but are undesirable on dry pavement - massively noisy, and studs both slip on asphalt, as well as wear out in a hurry.

They also take a tall on the road surface. For that reason, most US states don't allow them. I would be surprised if MD was studded tire friendly.

I would just look at performance winter tires. Either Blizzak's or Hakka's traction in the winter will amaze you.

Notice the thin tires on rally cars for snow, 2nd set of wheels is key

True on the 2nd set of wheels.

But as far as narrow tires go, those come into play only if you are driving in deep snow and need to dig down to solid ground. If 90+% of your winter driving is on cleared cold asphalt roads, with occasional patches of snow and ice, narrow tires will compromise handling for that 90% of driving. Stick with stock sized winter tires.

If your winter driving is on un-plowed roads to/from a skiing cabin in Vermont or Colorado, you may benefit from narrower studded tires. On the second though, you may want to buy a dedicated winter beater since low riding M3 will likely beach itself on a snow bank regardless of what tires you are on

He speaks the truth. There's a couple more photos in the thread below of my studded setup:

http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...3&postcount=14

I needed studs because I compete in local ice driving events. For ice, the studs make a big difference over tires without studs. The level and height of studs on the Hakka8's is still very low to be competitive. The guys up top are all running much larger studs that can't be street or daily driven. For the street, the Hakka8's should be a good choice. They are relatively quiet (can only hear them below 40km/h), and they are friendly on the roads. They barely protrude from the tire, but they protrude enough to help you if you run into any icy conditions. If the conditions make sense, I wouldn't hesitate to go studded. If you only see puffs of snow here and there, a performance winter would be a better option.

+1 to all of that.

Coolmody and I live in the same city, but I don't (yet) do his crazy ice racing. I have Michelin PA4s (performance winters) and they are fine for handling 'normal' winter driving in a city where we get snow, then it melts, then it snows, then it melts with most driving being on dry wet with the odd day on snow.

But for the ice racing, studs would be waaay too much even for our winters up here.

Best Snow/ Ice tires ive EVER ran were the X Ice xi3's on my 335i... its was like i has a 4WD Truck. I could Stop, Dig and move through anything. It had a LSD though... but still.
