Intercooler

Might be a dumb question but can you add ice to the tank to lower fluid temp?

Numerous posts of intercooler being cool to touch even after racing.

Even in the summer. The stock units are pretty efficient if not seeing track usage.

That's because it is an air-to-water intercooler that has a closed loop liquid coolant system along with a radiator mounted in the wheel fender. To make it more efficient, the best bet is to increase the radiator capacity to prevent heat soak at the track. But don't think I have heard one single complaint about IAT on this car yet... so not sure if it is necessary.

What design and by who?

I really can't see the need. This thing holds temps better than my stock e92 m3 after a long thrashing. I mean keeping revs at 5500 to 7500, redlining and pounding it, the temp indicator doesn't budge and power stays consistent.

Probably plumbing and clearance issues. But I bet we'll see one soon

Can you expand on this?

Have you suffered heat soak at the track?

Just to add precision, there are TWO radiators to cool the intercooler coolant. One in the fender (1), as you specified, and the other in front of the engine coolant radiator (3).

sometimes bolting on parts for the sake of bolting on parts isn't the best solution. Air to water systems are extremely efficient if the heat exchangers are up sufficiently sized.

There is always room for improvement. You can't sit here and say any manufacturer that has developed a turbo vehicle has absolutely Nailed it in exporting the most HP from the engine. There are always gonna be companies that put in a lot of R&D to extract every single HP out of the motor as possible. Don't be naive and think that BMW has done this. BMW de-tunes these engines if anything. Sure, the stock intercooler is sufficient enough, but with the right engineering, my guess is a proper front mount could add quite a few HP under the right conditions. It's coming, and when it does, a lot of guys will upgrade to the front mount. Just my .002

Good luck fitting a properly sized FMIC with the radiator and oil cooler in the way... And lets not forget you are going have to completely reroute the intake piping as well... Your understanding of the engineering is quite incorrect. Air-to-air intercooler, front mount as you call it, isn't necessarily more efficient than a water-cooled one like the stock system. It all depends on the setup... If you want more hp out of the S55 beyond the +600hp already provided by the Pure turbo upgrade, a FMIC isn't going to help the slightest bit.

It's not about being naive... You are correct - there is always room for improvement. I don't know if this comment was directed at me or not, but my point was intended to convey the fact that just because some company develops an aftermarket part to supplement doesn't make it better. It is wise to fully understand the affect that part will have on the rest of the system.

For example... Let's say someone develops an air-to-air FMIC setup for the car. You might lower charge air temps, but what are the trade-offs? Increased lag? - I suppose that is my point.

personally speaking - if you wanted to really consider an upgrade, it might be interesting to see if one could develop larger core radiators to replace the existing units for the heat exchanger setup. That would help stave off heat soak.

Chris.

My guess it is a upgraded radiator for the charge air cooling system?
