CANflap for those without a JB4!

As most of you know BMS has included CANflap with their JB4 system since 2009. It's a feature that lets you adjust the tailpipe exhaust valve to be open or closed on the fly from your drivers seat rather than having to manually unplug the valve. They recently added it to their S55 JB4 and its been very well received. So much so that many customers who want to run OEM tuning, flash tuning, or even other less sophisticated piggyback systems, have been asking BMS to make a stand alone module so they can have this feature. Myself included!

So BMS has worked up a quick install version of a stand alone module which is in testing now. Intro price will be $279 and it will be available with the OBDII connector (plug in and tuck under an interior cover), or a hardwire harness where you connect 4 posti-taps for a more permanent installation. Here's an early DEMO video of it in action. Note that BMS feels although the price is high for what it does they plan to add more functions to it down the road via free firmware updates. An in dash boost gauge is high on that list. In addition to controlling the exhaust flap it can also delete OBDII codes.

It has a hidden diagnostic OBDII code delete mode. It's not meant for deleting competition race use only faults but I suppose one could use it that way in a competition use only race car.

What sucks is that keeps the OBDII port occupied. In NY (not sure about other states) to pass inspection the OBDII port is needed. So the car won't inspection hence making this useless which is the only reason to clear the CEL in the first place.

For those that have these products that delete the CEL how do you know if it's a real problem or the catless Downpipes?

Different codes for DP vs other issues.

Couple of things:

1st, as mentioned in the original post, there is a more permanent way to install it, tapping into wires, rather than using the OBD2 port.

Quote:
a hardwire harness where you connect 4 posti-taps for a more permanent installation.
2nd, most smog readers (at least ones I am familiar with) also read code history. So, even if the CEL gets turned off every time a code lights up due to catless DPs, it will still be in the history that CEL xxxx happened 5 times, or 10 times, or whatever. Which would cause you to fail smog. Additionally, even if you totally clear everything, it will show that the history was permanently cleared xxx miles ago, or xxx hours ago, and that will also cause you to fail smog.

So, any of the CEL deleters, including this one, are not going to get you to pass smog, regardless of whether the OBDII port is occupied or not.

Thanks for the clarification on the permanent option I missed that.

Then NY smog testers are different than ones I have encountered, and I have smogged cars in at least 15 different states by now (the joys of military service transferring me all around the country)

1) It's illegal to install catless downpipes on any vehicle not used
exclusively for competition race use.

2) You will not be able to set emissions readiness with catless downpipes installed. Deleting a pending CEL via the OBDII port with a code delete tool is not going to set readiness or allow you to pass emissions testing. After a minute or two the CEL will just come right back on as the DME is not able to complete it's emissions testing cycle without OEM downpipes.

Seems like the time/date/MPG/etc. changes with each push of button still? No way to separate the two? Same functionality when you only have one button (no auto lights)?

What's the ETA on sale date? I'm interested, open valve cold start is not a neighbor pleaser.

So I guess I'm confused on the difference between code clearing on this device opposed to the JB4.

In terms of functionality, is it any different than that of the JB4?

Because it looks incredibly illegal here, but fine with the JB4.

Running catless downpipes in a non-competition use only race car is incredibly illegal. Deleting your OBDII codes using any code clearing device is not. They sell those at every auto parts store. Once you delete the code it comes right back up until you fix what is wrong with the vehicle triggering the code.

The S55 JB4 uses the lights button but for this one they will use the top button to make it more universal, at least initially, as many vehicles its compatible with don't have the second button.

I understand that, my question is what makes this different from the JB4 cel delete?
