Pressure warnings in cold weather
Temperatures just dropped to freezing in these parts, and when starting the car in the am, it showed pressure warnings for all 4 tires. As I was driving (slowly) the readings flipped from orange to green and back. Is this a sensor issue, or is tire pressure that sensitive to cold weather?

Its that sensitive. You can lose 5-6psi from summer to winter.

In my case neither. I found the TPMS are quite accurate. TPMS showed my rear passenger side at 27 psi in the freezing morning. Then I checked with my digital hand held gauge, and sure indeed the tire was at 27 psi.

My tire pressure monitor warning has been going off for the past several days, too, due to cold weather. I have tried multiple times to "reset" so the gray warning lamp will go off. It says the tire pressure monitor is reset, but the warning exclamation point icon is still there on the dash. This is happening every evening when I leave work after the car has been in the cold all day. Getting old.

With air in the tyre you will lose 1 psi every month on average. Further, in cold weather the psi will be reduced 1 psi for every 10F drop in ambient temp, hence its easy in cold weather to see a marked drop in tyre pressures. Don't ignore the warnings, put more air in the tyres to get to the recommended pressures.
At a certain psi you will not be able to perform a reset to stop the warning lighting up. |
