X2 should've had more personality, like Evoque is for Range Rover. Putting on a M badge and 300hk engine isn't really doing much. Boring and old tech, with to big of a price tag.

I wonder how many times you could run a current 330i around an autocross without experiencing limp mode? Compared to the original M3? You highlight the contradiction between new and old pretty well with that statement - if BMW has become a company focused on BHP and how "quick" a car is, there are other manufacturers who are much better at that - Audi and MB to name a few.

As for people not understanding why these crossover/suv coupe/lifted hatchback things are popular...well they hold more stuff than a car and unlike a car you don't have to get down into them. That makes life a lot easier when you're 20-50 pounds overweight as most Americans (and, these days, international consumers) are!

(I don't like M in front of my 240i. I wish they just call it 240, not M240) However, I cannot agree that M performance models are what 'base model' used to be. It's higher power engine offering from base model with mppk. (X3 30i is base, 228/230 is base) These M flavored models are closer to real M in terms of hp but nowhere near the suspension. That's where real M differentiates from other brands' performance cars. |

Hasn't every M35i turned into a M40i by this point?

As soon as they cheap out (like most every other automaker) and mount engines transversely, they've lost me as a buyer. No amount of marketing-speak and lipstick-on-a-pig engineering band-aids fix a fundamental design problem when it comes to driving dynamics. No thanks. |

Considering how many people on this forum talk about driving their vehicles in "comfort" or "eco" mode with all season tires and complain about "harsh" ride, M versions should not be standard. Unfortunately, BMW is no longer the company it was when the focus was 8000+ RPM NA horsepower.

The torque figure really amazes me. The N54 and N55 with the most basic outputs had 400Nm. This one has 450Nm, like the most basic B58. Not bad.
Not far of the A45/CLA45 AMG with 475 Nm, but those have 80hp more. This is still an m performance model. In a real M car we could probably see a 400hp output, maybe the engine for the next M2. |

In fairness it sounds like this is a lot more than just stickers and badges. An M Sport Package is stickers and badges. Just from a quick skim of the press release it looks like they changed the suspension, the transmission tuning (with launch control, not sure if the base models had this before), the seats (ask M2 owners about how important that is), the brakes, and even added a locking differential (something that's going to be available on other M Performance models going forward). I'm sure I'm missing some things, as well. It might not be a full M, but it's certainly a step towards M, and fits nicely in between. Frankly, after seeing how much they're doing to the X2 M35 and reading the gushing reviews of the M850 and Z4 M40 prototype drives, it shows me BMW is taking M Performance models seriously, and makes me very excited for the upcoming M340, M440, etc.

That was not me. Not going to buy a 4 cylinder BMW ever. And not going to buy FWD based BMW as well. If I will want Mini - I will get Mini.

why would you think BMW could fit a 3.0l 6 in a FWD platform? Use a wee bit of common sense.
