How do I unplug the Active Sound?
I found a rough description here ( http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...=unplug&page=7 ) , but now that I have the compartment open I have no idea if I'm looking at the right thing or what exactly I'm supposed to unplug.

I just used a long 1/4" socket extension to push the retainer in and a screwdriver to flip up the black plastic retainer. Looks like this... If you pulled the entire interior panel, it would look like this... You want to unplug the plug on the left from the vertical "Active Sound" amp. Took the pics from this thread... http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1082175 It is so worth it.

Only works if you have HK system where the ASM is a seperate unit.

The Active Sound module is actually a separate unit for non-HK (HiFi) systems as well, but it is wired such that if you unplug it, you do not get any audio signal at all. I can confirm this. I tried it :P For HiFi cars, the only way to get rid of AS is to get a bypass adapter, code it out, or use the BMS software, as far as I know.

Yup...did it this morning before work. The car sounds so much better without the fake growl from the active sound. Huge improvement! |

To all that have done this. Does your HK system sound better, worse or exactly the same once you do this?
Thanks in advance for any feedback. I have been curious about this for a while now. |

Sounds the same, but at least you can actually hear it at low volume if you want to.

I coded my active sound off. Now that I have downpipes I actually like to hear the sound of the motor not the stupid active sound.
You buy a performance car that sounds good if you are a purist driving this car I have no idea why anyone would want active sound. To me BMW M is about hearing and feeling the real car, I don't want video game sound I have Forza for that. |

The sound now with active sound disabled actually reminds me a little of my 08 e92 335 from the inside, except the F80 turbos are way more audible...and I was Dinan S2 in my 335i. Having said that, my turbo noise got a fair bit louder when I went Dinantronics Stage 1 on my F80. |
