e90 thermostat and water pump question
this is a common issue and i have read some post here
any recommendation of when should one do a prophylactic change? my car is a 2006 335i with only 35k km true mileage but my main ques is are the new thermostat and water pump really improved compared to the old ones? if yes, what is modified to make it less easy to fail? afterall if it is just the same, then theres no point of a prophylactic change? thanks |

My original water pump is just now showing signs of T-Stat failure and my 06 325i has over 220000. miles on her.

They are both very different. Some aren't even made by the same manufacturer. If anyone in the middle tennesse area wants it don't cheaper than a dealer or Indy. I can help you out.

It's pretty expensive to change prophylactically. They tend to fail around 100k miles. Mine went at about 80k miles. With such low mileage, yours might still last for a long time.

I can't say if it's any better or not, but my water pump failed at around 60K miles and I had to have it replaced.

I am now experiencing a 2EF4 code thermostat map not reading correctly or stuck open, I can reset it, but it comes back after a week or two. According to many forums this is the first sign of water pump failure and from what I have read it seems to be fairly accurate.
There is a safeguard that was built into these thermostats that fails open if there is an issue and your car run cool all the time and less efficient. Hope this helps!

in case anyone wants to know, heres a detailed thread
http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=561183 the problem appears to be the electronic part of the pump which deteriorate over time due to heat but i still cannot find a post that specifically describe what is improved in the new part hope someone can give me some insight on that also. may i know is this problem also in other bmw models with n52 n54 engines? thanks |

When warning signs occur, death is certain, no time to CPR, by this I mean, the temp light goes orange to red, BMWs jet engine fan that they put into the N54 starts up and the car goes into limp mode, mine wouldn't even move failed at around 125km or 77k miles

I searched the forum on this, it's not clear to me that this indicates near term failure for the wp, though I'll be checking codes for it more often than previously. |

I had never heard that term used in automotive context like that but I like it.

It just mean it didn't map (stat location time frame -v- resistive value) correctly.
