335i Automatic Shift Knob Replacement

Hi guys,

My automatic shift knob has a lot of scratches (previous owner had a ring most probably ) so I'm looking for a new one. I was thinking about the BMW Performance Shift Knob/Boot, but it is quite expensive (about $200 for both + shipping/taxes). I had a quick look on the web and found out this one: http://www.bimmian.com/Updated-Look-...r-E91-3-Series. What do you guys think about it? Is it a quality product? Do you have any infos/tips to share?

Thanks

I think it looks stupid especially with the gear indicator already on the side and the fact that the buttons are fake and don't do anything on the top and side. Get the performance shift knob for the automatic if you want something different.

I have the Bimmian shifter. And I totally agree with these guys:

Exactly. Buy the performance shift knob if you want something different from the Bimmian shift knob.

I completely agree - and since I love beer, the Bimmian knob was a natural.

Seriously, check out my review thread. In particular, scroll toward the end where I added the alcantara shift boot.

Haters gonna hate, but for $110 all-in, I freaking love it.

I have the m5 smg shift knob, I love it. The only thing is that there's no lock button on the shift knob but it has never been a problem for me.

Thanks! Great review!

I like the design and I don't care about the fake buttons... The only is... the size... Do you know what are the dimensions?

Hope there is a "short version" for E90...

I admit the size bothered me at first, but I'm totally liking it now. You can see that it sticks up a bit tall (6.5" above the console to be exact).

I gotta admit that the shortened one in your picture looks much better! Is this a Bimmian product, or a shortened stalk? I've heard of people cutting the stalk down to shorten the height. Either way, for the price, it's a great deal.

Some day when my slush fund isn't drained by home projects, I'ma get this one: http://www.motivemods.com/BMWRetrofi.../mm-sst-m3.htm

ps - just ordered my trim wrap, so hopefully it will look even better soon!

Thought about buying when I was "upgrading" my E90 but decided against it for because of the cost, redundancy of shift pattern, non-functional idiot lights and apparently uncomfortable design of the handle itself.

Cost: too inexpensive, I'm guessing? It's the least expensive option out there.

Redundant shift pattern: Not sure what you mean? The shift pattern is the same as the stock shifter, of course. What would be different?

Non-functional idiot lights: The lights actually are functional, and I don't get what's "idiot" about indicating gear selector position. The lights on the shifter are the same as on the lights on the console panel, and they actually indicate position of the gear selector - just like the console lights. If you remove the console panel and replace with a shift boot, then the lights on the shifter are not redundant with the lights on the console panel.

Non-functional buttons: You didn't mention this, but this is a legit complaint. Just doesn't bother me I guess.

Uncomfortable design of the handle: You got me there. I like it and think it's more comfortable than the stock handle, but I understand it's not for everyone.

Thanks!

Tacky.... If you don't like stock, get an aftermarket one, but the double shift indicators and fake buttons are killing it. A big no-no for me.

I was just reading this thread out of idle curiosity, now these momo knobs have me thinking about the mod. Especially considering the trim on mine has bubbled. I really like how low key the automatico is and how easily it looks like it would tie into my interior.

Cost: May not be the most expensive option, but not worth the price to me.

Redudant shift pattern: On the dash, console and the shifter.

Non-functional idiot lights: Meant the non-functional buttons; my mistake.

Uncomfortable design: An individual choice.

Conclusion: To each his own. If you like it, enjoy it.

What if you (I) buy the non-illuminated version of the bimmian shift knob? No redudant shift lights anymore...? and even less expensive... ($100 instead of $150)

My shifter was doing that also. I would just stick with performance knob. Its like $92 at getbmwparts.com (no boot). Or you can even wrap the peeling trim on the original knob

I still do not understand why they have chosen to have a fake park button taht does not do anything instead of using that to show the current gear

Yeah, that would have been great to use that space to show the current gear. However, I've the Alpina B3 transmission flash so I have the current gear displayed in my dash screen!

Even nothing at all in that space would have been better than the fake button
